McConnell Says the Obvious-Shutdowns Are A Loser for Republicans [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-09-20 With Republicans set to shut down government again, there’s been some speculation that Republicans will be able to spin this as the fault of Democrats. This would make involve an assist from the both-sides media. The problem for the media and Republicans is that the public is very good at accurately assessing blame. Starting with the mid-1990s clashes between President Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich's Republican majority in Congress, there have been seven government shutdowns or close calls that were the subject of polling. While each situation was unique, Republicans have been blamed for most of them, although Democrats took the blame for the most recent, a short affair back in January, even though Republicans controlled the House, Senate and White House at the time. The President hasn't been blamed in any of the previous shutdowns. my emphasis But if you’re still worried, Mitch McConnell has chimed in: “I think all of you know I’m not a fan of government shutdowns. I’ve seen a few of them over the years,” the Republican leader said at his weekly news conference with reporters. “They never have produced a policy change, and they’ve always been a loser for Republicans politically.” This isn’t to say that a shutdown would be good- government workers will struggle with not getting paid, businesses that rely on those workers will make less money, etc. But rest assured, it won’t be Biden or the Democrats that the public will be angry at.
