Standing With Ukraine [1]

So, spouse came down with another reason to visit the ER yesterday after a scary reduced consciousness episode. Admitted to the hospital and under decent care in a hospital that has construction around that is making it nearly impossible to find anything, I stopped in to see her and update nursing on her history. This was not her usual hospital as additional testing was going to be needed, but I digress. As I’m waiting outside the room, in my “Stand with Ukraine” t-shirt, a tall gent next to me with some plastic flowers started to ask me about a movie that had come out about child trafficking called Sound of Freedom. I allowed as I hadn’t been to a movie theatre since Covid took hold and he said I should see it. He went on to mention that he was an ex-cop both locally and previously in Los Angeles and that his wife was my wife’s roommate. I had no idea why this topic out of the blue needed our attention, but we chatted on. I was waiting for the other shoe to drop and for a speech on Clinton grooming children or Biden leading us to hell to arrive. Didn’t happen.

He mentioned that he’d seen many cases of child, elderly and racial abuses in his years in law enforcement. He asked if I was Italian too. I said, “Almost, I’m Jewish.” We laughed and he mentioned the holocaust survivors he’d encountered back in LA. I allowed how my own grandmother had 12 siblings, half of whom died in the camps (he had mentioned Dachau) and most of the rest were killed in the war as well. My dad was born in Oswiecim (the polish city where the most infamous Aushwitz camps were established) and grandma had used her smarts to get herself, her son and a trunk of possessions out of Poland just ahead of the incoming Nazi hordes.

I went on to blather a bit about how today the people who claim to Stand With The Blue were using clubs, bear spray and flagpoles to batter those cops they purport to stand with. And that today Republicans want to stand up for Vladimir gd Putin, the former commie head of the KGB?! He glanced down at my t shirt again. He said that January 6 was one of the most disgraceful things he’d ever seen. About this time, the nurses had finished up with our spouses and we were allowed in. I overheard my new friend talking with his spouse about our conversation. I tried to explain to mine where she was, why she was there and what was happening but got only a confused one-eye-open look in response. The antibiotics were just starting to kick in I guess. Gonna be a while.

My buddy was also getting up and getting ready to leave and as we both approached the door he leaned over to be in a quiet voice and said: “I’ve only got one more thing to say: F*ck Trump!” This day still sucked, but a little less.
