[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-09-26 SCOTUS has just issued a ruling declining to hear Alabama’s appeal of the US District Court’s order throwing out their redistricting scheme. Alabama essentially had asked the Supreme Court to revisit the issue of voting rights in the state only months after the justices unexpectedly rejected the earlier version of Alabama’s congressional districting map, citing the landmark civil rights law. SCOTUS had ruled earlier that the map was illegal, and required that another majority-Black district be created. So the AL Secretary of State made a few minor changes that clearly did not comply with the original order, and appealed again. There had been rumors in right wing circles that Kavanaugh was reconsidering his vote and would be sympathetic to reversing the earlier 5-4 decision. But today’s ruling cuts that rumor off at the knees. There are other states (Louisiana and Georgia) with similar maps that have already been declared illegal and may be next in line for a comeuppance. Perhaps the arc of the moral universe is bending?
