Battleground Series: PA Unemployment Rate by County 2019 v. 2022 compared to the 2020 Election [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-09-27 This is the first in a series of comparing the change in unemployment rate by county in the battleground states with the 2020 presidential election results of that state. Trump loves to claim he had the best economy in recorded history when he was just riding Obama’s coattails. I do not know how many times on TikTok I have seen Trump supporters say there were more jobs in their town or county when Trump was president versus now. So being the data nerd that I am, I decided to go digging to find out what the data actually shows. I wanted to compare the height of Trump’s “economic miracle” so I used data from 2019 before the pandemic to prevent Trump supporters from arguing it is unfair to use the pandemic year of 2020 (because we all know how well he handled the pandemic). My hope is that this data might be helpful for local candidates etc. I am sure someone in higher level campaigns already has something like this. The link to the data source is below. The first up is the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania! Oh, and did I say there were maps? Oh, yes there are maps! I used MapChart to create the maps. First off, I apologize for the small image as the site understandably limits the file size that can be uploaded. This first map details where unemployment has decreased and increased comparing the years 2019 and 2022. Central and Eastern Pennsylvania has had the employment picture brighten while western Pennsylvania has struggled. Now compare that to the county level results from the 2020 election and you can see there are a lot more red voting counties that have seen the employment situation improve. Here is the data that I compiled from the years 2019, 2020, and 2022 which can be found at BLS. Again I apologize for the small size. If someone wants it in a more readable form, I can maybe find another way to get it to you.
