Forward projection: Where we go from here is up to us [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-09-30 Space tourism and active high-speed-rail building, these are two constructs in America, at least, that are new, in this, the 21st century. It’s also a time whereby children went toe-to-toe in court with the fossil-fuel industry in Montana, and won. A first! And, add to that, digital television and social media that has seen unprecedented growth! All this and more has occurred since the big Y2K scare back in the mid-to-late 1990s. Remember? So, being that the America of today and that of yesteryear are like worlds apart on so many fronts, what with as many of us jockeying for position or place in modern society as there are, trying to figure out what our roles and places are in the grand scheme of things and which can be quite challenging, daunting or intimidating at times if we haven’t yet determined what that place or role is, at this jumping-off point I would stop and ask: Where do we go from here? What are the kinds of things you would like to see as we all navigate our way on the road ahead, to make our home (Earth) a far more inhabitable and livable planet? What is it we want? Well, of course, I have my own ideas of how I think we should proceed, as do, I’m sure, most planetary occupants. The biggest challenge I believe is going to be how to sufficiently feed, clothe, house, care for and meet all other needs of an expanding populace, not only today but in the days, weeks, months, years and decades ahead. Arguably, much would be eased and made smooth if all were on equal footing and in lockstep when it came to pursuing our so-called hoped-and-dreamed-for destinies. So in my way of thinking, the way in which we proceed will have much if not everything to do with what available resources there are at our disposal and how said resources are utilized; and on technology, how we apply what we have and get the maximum value out of and benefit from it, if that can be established, then the advance should be successful. Of course, every once in a while, a monkey wrench will enter scene to try to trip us up. And, there is no way to anticipate what that could be. COVID-19 tested our resolve, but we made it through, although somewhat the worse for wear. But, it is conceivable that this experience both collectively and individually made us stronger and better equipped to deal with a similar future outbreak. The climate crisis could also prove to be a formidable opponent as that is proving to be the case currently. Add to the resources and technology components a needed sharp focus and a delegating framework to ensure society’s continued refinement and improvement. That’s de rigueur both to our survival and currently maintained if not an improved quality of life. That, I believe, is what we will be looking at.
