It takes a village or Community [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-01 Community. It’s a simple idea, really. Rather than try to describe the concept itself, I think it’s better just to give an example. So, let’s see what I mean. In the early 2000s I worked for a publishing outfit. I hired on as an advertising sales executive and then before retirement, I agreed to switch over to the operation’s editorial side. It was only temporary. The associate editor was moving out and onward, and with the managing editor’s spot earlier vacated, the company was in the process of finding a replacement to fill the top slot. So, in the interim, I elected to serve in the capacity of associate editor until such time that the editorial manager’s shoes were filled, a duty for me that lasted all of three months. Temporarily satisfying the associate editor’s role by staying in-house meant the publisher didn’t have to assume that responsibility herself. As for the position I left, since it was going to be for one quarter only, the remaining sales personnel just picked up the slack. That there? That’s community to the hilt. On full display I think we saw some of that play out in Congress yesterday. In an eleventh-hour scramble, House Democrats got behind the effort to keep the government from shutting down, which would have happened at 12:01 a.m. the morning of Oct. 1, 2023 (today), had a deal not been reached. It was the stopgap that Speaker of the House (of Representatives) Kevin McCarthy needed and, in time, to avoid a government work stoppage. It provides a 45-day reprieve which will hopefully provide enough time to institute a much more permanent solution. The Senate subsequently got on board and by the end of the day President Biden affixed his signature to the representative bill and the day was saved. Community. Now that’s what I’m talking about! Oh, and by the way, that which had just taken place, ditto that.
