BBC Migrants trying to reach the UK cross the Alps on foot In a corner of the Italian Alps, a queue of Sudanese and Afghans are swapping their sandals for hiking boots and replacing flip-flops with sturdy trainers, preparing, they hope, for their trek to freedom. They are today's arrivals - around 150 - at a makeshift camp in the picturesque town of Oulx manned by local volunteers. They give out donated coats to the migrants to help them survive the mountain temperatures on the arduous journey ahead. For even here, having reached Italy from across Africa and the Middle East, these groups of mostly young men want to go on to France and beyond. More than 130,000 migrants have entered Italy this year - almost double the same period in 2021, following a surge of arrivals by boat to the southern Italian island of Lampedusa. Numbers travelling north to the border with France have doubled in the past few months. NPR Turkey strikes suspected Kurdish militants in Iraq after a suicide attack in Ankara ANKARA, Turkey — Turkish warplanes carried out airstrikes on suspected Kurdish militant targets in northern Iraq on Sunday following a suicide attack on a government building in the Turkish capital, Turkey's defense ministry announced. Some 20 targets of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, were "destroyed" in the latest aerial operation, including caves, shelters and depots, the ministry said, adding that a large number of PKK operatives were "neutralized" in the strikes. Earlier on Sunday, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device near an entrance of the Interior Ministry, wounding two police officers. A second assailant was killed in a shootout with police. NPR Anger grows over Ukraine's largest Orthodox church, aligned with Moscow despite war KYIV, Ukraine — On a recent autumn afternoon, Ukrainian worshipers witha branch of the Orthodox church long tied to Moscow gathered on a street outside a monastery in Kyiv to sing and pray. They come here often as an act of protest against a decision issued by Ukrainian authorities earlier this year. Government officials effectively banished clergy loyal to the Moscow patriarch from the most sacred parts of a nearby gold-domed monastery complex called the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. Those ties became intensely controversial in February 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine with the blessing of Kirill, the Moscow patriarch and head of the Russian Orthodox Church. Speaking last year, Kirill promised Russian soldiers who die in the conflict that their "sacrifice washes away all sins." The militant role of the Russian Orthodox Church has drawn condemnation from religious leaders including Pope Francis, who described Kirill as "Putin's altar boy." Politico Newsom picks Laphonza Butler as Feinstein replacement California’s governor chose a labor leader turned power player to serve in the Senate, and an adviser told POLITICO there were no preconditions about whether she could run in 2024. California Gov. Gavin Newsom will appoint EMILY’s List President Laphonza Butler to fill the seat of the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein, elevating the head of a fundraising juggernaut that works to elect Democratic women who support abortion rights, according to a person familiar with the decision. Now on DKos www.dailykos.com/… The Guardian Sapling planted at Sycamore Gap removed by National Trust A man who planted a sapling at the site where the Sycamore Gap tree previously stood at Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland has said it is “devastating” that it has been removed. The National Trust dug up the young sycamore planted by 27-year-old Kieran Chapman metres away from the stump of the historic tree, which was illegally felled overnight on Wednesday. Chapman, who is from Westerhope in Newcastle, said he had got the tree from a garden centre and taken it to the site to “try and restore people’s faith in humanity”. However, it is a criminal offence to damage a Unesco world heritage site and the National Trust was keen to discourage any other would-be planters. The Guardian Biden worries ‘extreme’ supreme court can’t be relied on to uphold rule of law Joe Biden worries that the “extreme” US supreme court, dominated by rightwing justices, cannot be relied upon to uphold the rule of law. “I worry,” the president told ProPublica in interview published on Sunday. “Because I know that if the other team, the Maga Republicans, win, they don’t want to uphold the rule of law.” The new court term, which starts on Tuesday, could see further such rulings on matters including government environmental and financial regulation. ProPublica reporting has stoked a growing ethics scandal concerning Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, two older rightwing justices, and their ties to rich rightwing donors with business before the court. “It’s far past time that Chief Justice Roberts clean up his court – and it’s the very least the justices can do to restore some semblance of credibility and integrity.” Reuters Couple killed in grizzly bear attack in Canada's Banff National Park TORONTO, Oct 1 (Reuters) - A grizzly bear attacked and killed two people and their dog in Alberta's Banff National Park, according to Canadian park officials and a friend of the victims. Parks Canada said in a statement on Saturday night it had received an alert late Friday from a GPS device indicating a bear attack in the Red Deer River Valley west of Ya Ha Tinda Ranch in Banff National Park. The bear was later euthanized after it displayed aggressive behavior, the agency said. The victims were a Canadian couple and their dog, according to Kim Titchener, the founder of Bear Safety and More and also a friend of the family. Titchener, who provides training on bear safety and bear assessments, said such encounters are increasing as more people head outdoors but fatal attacks are extremely rare. Reuters Polish opposition holds massive Warsaw rally ahead of tight election WARSAW, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Hundreds of thousands of people held an opposition rally in Warsaw on Sunday, two weeks ahead of an election that the liberal Civic Platform (PO) says may decide Poland's future in the European Union and its democratic standing. Opinion polls suggest the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) government could win the vote but may struggle to form a majority amid discontent among some over rising living costs and concern over an erosion of democratic checks and balances. Warsaw city authorities said about a million people attended in the capital's biggest rally on record. Public broadcaster TVP, which independent media observers say has become a government mouthpiece under PiS rule, quoted police saying about 100,000 people had joined. Online news channel onet.pl said that according to its calculations some 600,000-800,000 people attended the rally. Some carried banners saying "PiSexit" or "The cat can stay", referring to the pet animal of PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski.
