Will Democrats Back McCarthy Against the MAGA Madmen? [1]

Matt Gaetz has signaled his intention to trigger a vote to declare the Speaker’s chair vacant. What will Jeffries and the Democrats do? Will they sit on their hands, as they did all through the painful process that led to McCarthy’s election? Or will they vote as a block for McCarthy to continue as Speaker?

It’s been my view that Democrats shot themselves in the foot by not intervening in the Republican squabble over the Speakership at the beginning of the session. It’s not in Democrats’ interest to have a dysfunctional House, because the failure of government to get its act together reflects poorly on all sides. A Speaker who owes his or her gavel to Democratic support must be cooperative; one who owes Democrats nothing will be more likely to toe the MAGA line and make America ungovernable.

On November 17, there is another shutdown deadline looming. It seems to me that we need to emasculate the MAGA caucus to keep a shutdown from happening, and the best way to do that is to signal them that McCarthy has Democratic backing. Let the Republicans squabble among themselves in next year’s primaries, but we need to preserve a degree of sanity and functionality in our federal legislature if we have any hope to restore the American people’s confidence in their institutions.
