For those keeping score at home, here's (some of) the House Republicans who keep blowing up things [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-03 Follow the link below through the pay wall to find out: Most of the House Republicans who voted against Kevin McCarthy’s stopgap spending bill Friday have been a thorn in his side since before he was elected speaker. They tend to cluster ideologically on the far-right end of the political spectrum. All 21 of them ultimately voted against the temporary spending patch that passed the House on Saturday night. That bill then passed the Senate and kept the government open. About three-quarters of the 21 Republicans who voted against Mr. McCarthy’s temporary spending bill were supported by the campaign arm of the House Freedom Caucus during the 2022 midterms. Six members of the group are serving in Congress for the first time. This article is notable because The NY Times had been reporting on the fight over authorizing spending without going into a full list of the House Republicans who have been monkey-wrenching the process all along, other than to say it was a group of around 20 or so. (See here and here.) This article by Karen Yourish and Lazaro Game fills a real need. Reporting that doesn’t name names allows elected officials to evade accountability to their voters. If people are trying to understand why the government nearly shut down, it helps to be able to put faces and names together. The article goes further: It names the 11 who opposed McCarthy’s bid to be speaker It names the 18 who voted against suspending the debt ceiling back on May in the negotiations that led to the budget deal in May — that McCarthy reneged on in this latest fight over approving the spending he agreed to. It names the 8 who used a House procedure to grind everything to a halt in June The really interesting part is the table at the end of the article which lists the votes on each of the following issues by all of the House Republicans who have at least one no vote in these categories: Voted against McCarthy for Speaker Suspending the Debt Ceiling Procedural vote in June The spending stopgap measure It includes the district and state for each of them. Some stand-outs are Andy Biggs AZ, Dan Bishop NC, Eli Crane AZ, Matt Gaetz FL, and Matt Rosendale MT, who come up 4 for 4. More of this, please Gray Lady. With the demise of local reporting, this kind of information needs to be reported somewhere. Also something that would be useful: more reporting on just how extreme were the budget cuts these people were demanding. There was a lot of drama over the prospects of shutting down the government and what the consequences of that would have been, but not nearly enough on how much worse the cuts they are demanding would be and who would be hurt.
