Ghana- Schools, Schooling, and John's Kids [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-03 Just a quick update this week on John in Ghana and his work to help the poor and needy there. Well, to begin with, Anabel, the four year old orphan girl who was abandoned by her mother (the mother has since died) is in her second week of school. As it turns out there were some fees for her school materials, crayons and coloring books and the like, but those are basically small potatoes. Kid gotta learn how to color! And stay in the lines. But we are all happy that she is in school and being taken care of. The photo above is of Josephine, John’s oldest child. She has a different mother than John’s two youngest children and has been living with her mother but going to school elsewhere in Ghana. I am not sure of the details. John hasn’t talked about her much. She’s 14 years old and has just finished grade school (or the Ghanaian equivalent). Her mother refuses to pay for her higher education so Josephine is going to stay with John’s parents while she continues her schooling. Josephine is a perky, smart and gutsy girl. About a year ago she wanted to see her daddy and so rented a taxi and had him drive her halfway across Ghana to be with him. Of course we had a hard time paying off the driver, but I thought that said a lot for her courage and strength of character. John is having some problems with his other two children, Gary who is, I think, 8 years old (his birthday was last month) and little Patience, who is three. John is divorced from his wife and she had custody. It hasn’t been going well. Out of respect for John’s privacy I don’t want to go into detail (indeed I don’t know all of the details) but the children haven’t been going to school. His ex has been using all of his support money on drugs and finally abandoned them. I have spoken with her in the past. I got the impression of a somewhat simple and timid person. I will say no more than that but I am sorry for her. And of course the children need to be taken care of. They are presently staying with one of John’s sisters-in-law until John can take them. But these kids need to go to school! If they are to have any future they need an education. We have some other immediate issues but right now my focus is on John’s children and their education. So this is my concern for the week. John has also worked out a plan to help teenage mothers who are homeless on the beach in Accra. We will try to get to that as soon as we can. More info later. God bless.
