Simon Rosenberg says get involved in the VA Elections right away. So I did. You won't regret it. [1]

If there’s one Substack you should subscribe to it’s Simon Rosenberg’s Hopium Chonicles. Simon is what I call an “accurate optimist.” You may know him as the guy who got a lot of shit in 2022 from the likes of Nate Silver for smoking “Hopium” because he accurately predicted there would likely be no Red Wave. As I wrote here in August, in the great tradition of Dark Brandon, Simon coopted Silver’s derisive term as the name of his Substack. Of course, his “accurate optimism” is predicated on all of us making whatever efforts we can.

Simon has regular events — live and on zoom — to inform and motivate Democratic activists. On a recent zoom, he showed how with early voting, the first days of voting are as or more important than the last days because “banking” the early vote frees up campaigns to gather all the remaining votes. Early voting patterns were one reason he was right and almost everyone else was wrong last year — looking at you again, Nate: Where did our very own Daily Kos Poblano go anyway?

One of the reasons Simon was right about the “What Red Wave Election of 2022?” was his (and Tom Bonier’s) study of early voting patterns. So we can make it happen again right here, right now.

Inspired by last week’s zoom, last night i joined a VA phone bank for candidates around Suffolk VA. In just about 80 minutes, about 25 of us dialed into over 5500 numbers, had almost 200 conversations, identified about 145 supporters and got between 6-13 volunteers.

I know, I know, phone-banking is not for everyone. (Hell, it’s hardly for me.) But remember, these are largely friendly recipients. Plus, there’s other ways to help.
