We need all the help we can get [1]

When Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union, Churchill wrote that if Hitler invaded Hell, he would at least make a favorable reference to the Devil in Parliament. Churchill was adamantly against Communism and was under no illusions about Stalin. But Hitler was an immediate and deadly threat. If Hitler wasn’t stopped, any threat from Communists would no longer matter.

We are facing a deadly threat to our democracy. If Trump or the autocratic ideas that Trump and his followers want to implement gain power, any disagreements between those who oppose him won’t matter, since at best we will be pushed out of any participation in government, at worse I don’t even want to think about it.

Some people here on DKos have written that we should reject people like John Kelly, Cassidy Hutchinson, or Liz Cheney because they have consistently opposed our positions in the past, or even worse have worked with or for Trump. My feeling about this is that they started out wrong about Trump, but it’s far better to be late to the realization of how bad Trump is than never. Some of these people have seen Trump’s narcissism, megalomania, malice, and dishonesty first hand. They make ideal witnesses to the danger of Trump. We need to accept people like these as allies if they want to work to defeat Trump and Trumpism. Even we disagree with these people on many issues, they still can be allies on the vital issue of continuation of democracy. Some of them might even become more open to our ideas if they work with us and see that they might have a distorted image of Democrats.

No one has to compromise on their advocacy of the ideals of equity, inclusion, and equality that we at DKos support. But it will be a lot easier to advance these ideals if our democracy is functioning well as an arm of all the people of our country.
