[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-04 Sorry I am late! Business trips mess up my thinking. So here goes! For the first time in about a century, the Speaker of the House has been removed. I’m not surprised by this since McCarthy gave into so many concessions to get the job in the first place. Also not surprising? The GOPers are trying to blame Democrats. x Rep. McHenry (R-NC) implies that Democrats are somehow betraying the Constitution by not voting to save McCarthy. “I understand where the liberals are. I know you support the constitutional order except in a moment like this … You can’t be counted on in a moment like this.” — Will Saletan (wsaletan on Threads) (@saletan) October 3, 2023 McHenry is the temporary Speaker while the GOP tries to elect a new one. And why didn’t the Democrats “save” McCarthy? Because he can’t be trusted. From bowing to Trump after 1/6 to allowing an “impeachment” of President Biden go forward without the required vote. The latest example being Democrats saving his ass by helping to keep the government open and then he turns around, goes on the Sunday shows and blames Democrats for the mess. Speaker Jeffries played that TV appearance in the Dem caucus meeting. Members were not amused. So what now for the GOP? Who will be the new leader? Of course you have someone suggesting this: x .@realDonaldTrump for Speaker 🇺🇸 — Greg Steube (@gregsteube) October 3, 2023 Of course, I think they’re floating his name because they’re out of ideas. There is a House rule that a Speaker who is under felony indictment must step aside, so kind of hard to see how they’d get GOP House members from Biden districts to vote for him. So, now we wait. And unfortunately while we wait, nothing gets done. Here’s a great tweet that further illustrates the which party is actually interested in governing… x Just a reminder that with the *exact same margin* that Republicans currently have, Democrats passed the Inflation Reduction Act, American Rescue Plan, Infrastructure package, gun safety law, PACT Act, CHIPS Act, and reauthorized VAWA. Republicans can't even choose a Speaker. — Brian Tyler Cohen (@briantylercohen) October 3, 2023 To me it appears the GOP members would rather be in the minority because they can just scream and yell and vote “no”. That’s all for now. Chat away! I’ll be teaching a class and driving 3 hours home in the afternoon so I won’t be able to post. Sorry again for being late!
