In June, I wrote a diary about Zee who had just moved into the camper in my back yard and needed help. Last weekend I wrote a diary about RJ, my best friend, whose house had just burned down and needed help. Zee needed $500, and the DK community responded rapidly. I didn’t and don’t know the extent of RJ’s need, but the DK community has responded with $1,400 as of this writing.

Also, on top of the monetary contributions, many people recced the diaries to give them more exposure and wrote comments or just read and thought a good thought. This update is for everyone who cared. Your generosity has made a difference, and I want to update you on what’s going on.

Zee has gotten a job (!!!) and last Monday spent the first night in his new place. It’s a nearby house that a neighbor of mine owns and it needs tons of work, but it’s a big step up from a camper. It’s got indoor plumbing and a working toilet, for example. Zee is recovering better than the ophthalmologist ever dreamed he would from the cornea eating bacterial eye infection he got this summer, and he’ll find out next week when his cornea transplant surgery will happen. I truly believe that had it not been for the DK response to my request for help for Zee, he would not be in this place where he has a stable living situation and is able to contribute to society. Thank you so much for caring. It makes a difference!

RJ went back to work today for the first time since the fire. In the six days that have passed since the fire broke out, he’s been able to find a place to live while he rebuilds, and will probably get to move in next week. He and his daughter went back to work today in clothes that contributors here helped buy them, and they’ve started the process of getting their important documents recovered. I joke with him that he’s an undocumented citizen. He laughs, but it’s really a lot. The best theory that any of the professionals have on what started the fire was that it was a lightning strike, which makes sense to me, but it could be that no one will really ever know. RJ has expressed to me so many times that knowing that people care is what’s getting him through this. Thank you so much for caring. It makes a difference!

This is truly a wonderful community and I just want y’all to know that every good thought and good action you put out there makes a difference. I have the evidence!
