Democrats back Casey 96 - 2 percent, while Republicans back McCormick 89 - 7 percent. Independents are split, with 45 percent supporting McCormick and 44 percent supporting Casey. Voters have a favorable opinion of Casey 42 - 26 percent with 31 percent saying they haven't heard enough about him. One-quarter of voters (25 percent) have a favorable opinion of McCormick, while 17 percent have an unfavorable opinion of him, and 57 percent say they haven't heard enough about him. Here’s some more info: Pennsylvania is not only going to be a big state to win next year, it’s also a big state we need to win this year: The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) announced Wednesday it plans to make a “six-figure investment” in Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court race, calling it an election that will have “long-term consequences, not just for the court, but for the state Legislature as well.” Republican candidate Carolyn Carluccio, a judge on the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas, is running against Democrat Daniel McCaffery, a judge on the Pennsylvania Superior Court. The two are competing for the seat left vacant on the state Supreme Court when Justice Max Baer died last year. In the not-so-distant past, judicial races typically flew mostly under the radar, and drew low voter turnout and unremarkable spending. But in 2015, the year Democrats won a majority on the state high court, the amount spent topped $15.8 million, breaking the national record for any state Supreme Court election at the time (that record was obliterated earlier this year by the Wisconsin Supreme Court election, where spending surpassed $45 million). And this year’s contest has attracted attention from well outside the commonwealth’s borders. Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court decided some highly consequential cases last year alone, picking a new state congressional redistricting map, and upholding the state’s no-excuse mail-in voting law. The court is expected to deal with cases involving voting rights and reproductive rights in the near future. And Democrats want to prepare for the long term, said DLCC spokesperson Abhi Rahman, something he acknowledged the party has struggled to do. “In the mid-2010s we lost everything,” because Republicans had built a strong bench of candidates, he said. Recognizing that most legislation happens at the state level, “we did a 180 after 2016.” FYI, Pennsylvania Republicans are going to nominate another candidate who doesn’t live in Pennsylvania: Through the marvel that is modern air travel, a candidate for public office is no longer confined to living in the state they hope to serve in. This relatively new phenomenon appears to be a godsend for David McCormick, a Republican who reportedly now lives in a Connecticut mansion but is poised to run for US Senate in Pennsylvania, where he appears to have chartered a number of private planes to promote his political bid. Federal Aviation Administration records list McCormick as a co-owner of four Pilatus PC-12s operated by PlaneSense, a fractional aircraft ownership program. According to Flightradar24, on Monday morning, one of those planes flew from Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where McCormick visited the state capitol. There, he was reportedly spotted talking with Doug Mastriano, the Capitol riot participant who was defeated in the Pennsylvania gubernatorial election last year. After a few hours of glad-handing, the same plane took off from Harrisburg back to Bridgeport. Per Flightradar24 data provided to Vanity Fair, on August 9, another plane operated by PlaneSense flew from Bridgeport to Allegheny County, where McCormick attended a local Republican function the following day. Three days later, another PlaneSense plane flew from Allegheny County to Bridgeport, and McCormick proceeded to tear into Pittsburgh, the city he publicly claims as his place of residence. “It’s just devastating to see how our city has declined under the Democrats’ one party rule,” he wrote in a post later that day on X, the site formerly known as Twitter. Maddy McDaniel, a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, told me that McCormick is “lying about living in Pennsylvania,” and that he, “won’t be able to fool Pennsylvanians about where he really lives or his record of enriching himself and his Wall Street friends at their expense.” Health and Democracy are on the ballot this year and next year and we need to make sure we keep Pennsylvania Blue.
