Pledge of Allegiance [1]

I wrote this 6 years ago, sadly, very sadly, still true today.

The Pledge of Allegiance:

I recently had a conversation with a teacher here in NC about the question of taking the pledge, what it means, and your options to do or not do it. I mentioned to her an ad I had seen on TV which ripped me apart, to my knowledge, it’s been pulled. But that ad in combination with my feelings has created this:

I could pledge allegiance to a nation where human beings were created to be human, and all mankind was made up of kind women and kind men and common knowledge was truly commonly known and a nation where a life enlightened is a life truly known.

I could pledge allegiance to a nation where neighbors were neighborly, and indifference was a forgotten word.

I could pledge allegiance to a nation where everything was shared and being greedy was not revered but scorned.

I could pledge allegiance to a nation that lived and breathed the notion of the Golden Rule, and the Golden Rule ruled every man, woman and child.

I could pledge allegiance to a nation that accepted ALL people, regardless of color, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation, ALL of it and accepted and celebrated our humanity and our differences.

I believed at one time that that was my country, a daughter of an immigrant, a product of the “American Dream”.

That dream has died.

I can no longer Pledge Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America thanks to Trump & his cabal, the GOP and Russia. We are NOT ONE nation. We are divided, savagely split. Our liberty is threatened. Justice can be and is bought.

Perhaps I could pledge allegiance to a new America where ALL People, All Faiths, ALL Colors, Gays, Transgenders, HUMANS, were united for the Common Good and shared a sense of humility and humanity and a profound sense of Community. We are ONE nation and can accept NOTHING less than Liberty, Opportunity and Justice for each and every one of us. If we need to revolt, it wouldn’t be the first time.
