Fundraising on court cases [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-05 This is more of a question to the community than a diary. Thanks in advance to those who are our legal minds and maybe answer this for me. We just learned today that Donald Trump raised almost $45m since his court cases began. Some of these court cases could go on for months and it would not be unreasonable to think that over the months Trump could raise almost as much money off his cases as he could be made to pay in penalty for his current NY civil lawsuit. Let’s say that Engoron imposes a penalty of $200-250m, but Trump raised that much, or more, off those cases — is there really any penalty there? He’s just making his cult horde pay his bills for him. So if the musings of a saffron despot are benefiting him that much, can a judge include the money raised in campaign, off the court case, as part of the penalty? Can the judge say the penalty is whatever the penalty is PLUS whatever funds raised by using publicity from this court case? But how does that work with him being a presidential candidate? So, my question is, what could the judge legally do to make sure the penalty is really a penalty and not just a bailout by fans?
