Introduction [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-06 Hello. I just created this account and thought I would provide a brief introduction so you all know where I’m coming from. I’ve been a Democrat-leaning voter for a while, but only became a straight-ticket Democratic voter after most of the Republican party supported Trump’s attempt to hold onto power following his election loss. My top political priorities can be summed up as follows: 1. Keep the Republican party from gaining governmental power. Based on their behavior after the 2020 election, I believe that a substantial minority of the party is hoping to establish a one-party dictatorship in America while the clear majority of the party is happy to go along with such schemes if it benefits them at the moment. Under these circumstances, I would not even consider voting for the Republicans who have resisted Trump’s efforts (like Gov Brian Kemp of GA) because their victories empower the rest of the Republican party too. The only viable outcome I see at this point is for the Republican party to dissolve. I initially hoped that the coup faction could be removed from Republican party leadership, but that hope was dead by the 2022 elections. 2. Keep the Democrats honest and democratic. Even if we succeed in keeping the Republican coup faction out of power, we’re in a dangerous position where Democratic politicians may be tempted to think that they can do whatever they want, knowing that many people like me will reliably vote for Democrats just to keep the Republican coup faction away from power. Elected officials may be especially prone to over-reach when faced with a violent opposition that is threatening the lives of government officials and substantial chunks of the population; we need to assure that efforts to break up seditious conspiracies respect all recognized rights (free speech, privacy, due process, etc). We need to find ways to challenge and replace unacceptable Democrat politicians without handing power to Republicans. My impression is that the Daily Kos community knows something about this. 3. Build a culture of free and equal debate, grounded in a shared commitment to understanding the world we live in. This is complex, so maybe I’ll address in separately. But in brief, I support the existence of independent journalism and decentralized social media. Most immediately, I want the Fediverse to break up the near-monopolies of big-tech, especially exTwitter. I also want to assure the independence of scholars and further improvement of education and scholarly communication, both among experts and with the general public.
