Donald Trump is its warlord.” [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-06 “The GOP is a failed state. Donald Trump is its warlord.” That was the headline of a prescient essay in Slate in 2016, which noted that “failed states” is the term in foreign policy for governments that don’t govern. And that’s exactly what we’re seeing in the GOP now—in the total chaos in the House of Representatives, in the utter disarray of the Republican State Legislature in Wisconsin, and in the messy Republican presidential primary. Why did the most extreme MAGA wing of the GOP oust Kevin McCarthy? Because he didn’t shut down the government over nothing. What is the Wisconsin GOP’s answer to our state’s child care crisis? Zilch. They’re too busy threatening to impeach everyone who stands in the way of their power, demonizing LGBTQ kids, and attacking the University of Wisconsin. Meanwhile, in the Republican presidential race, most of the candidates are too afraid of their own shadows to actually draw a contrast with the person they’re trying to beat—and that person, Donald Trump, wants to shut down all debates. Presumably so he can focus on Truth Social posts and leaking nuclear secrets to foreign billionaires . Democrats are in array. MAGA Republicans have turned their party into a carnival of chaos. What are Republican political leaders now saying about their own party? Here’s Ari Fleischer, once the Press Secretary to George H.W. Bush: “The Republican Party today just can’t govern. Nancy Pelosi with a five vote majority was able to govern. The Democrats have become the party of discipline and the Republicans have become the party that lacks discipline.” x Republican on Fox: The Republican Party today just can’t govern. We are more fit for being a party in the minority.” x Wow. Former advisor for Paul Ryan and John Boehner lays out the electoral case against Republicans. “We are not a party fit for governing. Johnson: If we don’t fix the foundational problems of the House Republican Conference, the new Speaker is just going to be in the same old stupid clown car but a different driver pic.twitter.com/JOSKk4BydG — Biden-Harris HQ (@BidenHQ) October 5, 2023 It’s in moments like this that I thank my lucky stars that Joe Biden is president. This morning, news broke that our economy created 336,000 more jobs —bringing the Biden presidency’s tally to a record-smashing 14 million. Inflation is coming down. Big Pharma has now been forced to negotiate on the cost of crucial drugs for Medicare beneficiaries. Broadband access is expanding. Workers are organizing for fair contracts, bolstered by a Democratic Party that believes in the dignity of work. Far from the GOP maelstrom, good things are happening. x High-speed internet is no longer a luxury. It’s a necessity for every Wisconsin family across our state. Proud to deliver support that will help connect more families, businesses, & farmers in South Central Wisconsin to the internet they need to participate in our economy. pic.twitter.com/jEOduMfEop — Sen. Tammy Baldwin (@SenatorBaldwin) October 1, 2023 The GOP is a failed state. But the United States of America is not. Here in Wisconsin, it’s the same story—the GOP is a national disgrace, but our state is thriving. No doubt, we still have enormous challenges, and there is so much to do. But at every level of government and in civil society, people of goodwill are putting in the work to do it. We have leaders with integrity. And the reason why we have them? You. The organizers, the volunteers, the activists, the people who refused to fall into the Trumpian whirlpool and, instead, rolled up their sleeves—in 2018, in 2020, in 2022, and just this spring—to ensure that democracy would flourish in this land. We’ll be tested over the next 396 days, as we approach the 2024 election. But we’ve done this before, and we can do it again. Don’t let the clown show mesmerize you. Focus on what you can change. And make every day count.
