Top Comments: Notebook #91: Lost and never found [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-06 One of the commenters in the Abbreviated Pundit Roundup just reminded me of something that I don’t think I’ve gotten over for...what is it, over 30 years now. Back when I lived in Washington D.C. in the late 1980’s, I dated a guy who DJ’ed as a hobby. He would practice in his home, which had a complete 2-turntable set-up and a set of dance records that dated back to the 1970’s; most of the dance hits that I knew and even records that I hadn’t heard before. N. showed me how to DJ. Now understand that I have, like, no rhythm; N. bought me a beat counter to assist me with the mixing since I couldn’t do it by ear and I started to get the hang of it. I enjoyed doing it so much that eventually, I started to buy my own 12” dance records to mix; everything from Whitney Houston’s “Love Will Save The Day” (a favorite record of mine to mix because it has a great break to segue into other songs...FTR, this is still a bop with that break at 5:38) to house classics to 12” singles imported from overseas mostly bought from pilgrimages to 12 Inch Dance Records on P Street in Dupont Circle. So...the relationship with N. ended (mostly my fault) and I never did get that turntable set-up so I had two crates of records that I eventually took back home to Detroit and stored them in my mother’s basement. I played them everyone once in awhile but basically they gathered dust. I moved to Chicago in 1990 but never did retrieve them. The story continues after I tell you who we are and what we do here at Top Comments. Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find! I went back home because of the death of my grandmother in 1995. I had a good job and I was considering buying a turntable setup and reviving my DJ hobby so I went into Mom’s basement looking for my crates of records but they were gone. “Mom, where are my crates of records?” “I threw them out, it seemed like you didn’t want them and I had no use for them.” WHAT!?!!! The he*l. OK, first of all, I spent over $1000 on those two crates of records. Second of all, Mom threw out my vinyl records yet she was allowing her own collection of vinyl records (going back to the 1960’s) to gather dust in the attic? Third of all, she threw out my crates of records but kept the chemistry set that she bought me for a present when I was 11 years old that I rarely used even back when she originally bought it. SHE KEPT MY CHEMISTRY SET BUT THREW OUT MY RECORDS!?!!?! What type of sense...oh, never mind. Besides, it’s Mom and, as she is fond of telling me to this day, it’s my house. Whatcha gonna do? I don’t think about those records too much anymore. I do get nostalgic about hearing club classics from those times like Raze’s Break 4 Love, Jomanda’s Make My Body Rock (which I used to mix off of a Big Beat Records EP that had two other songs that I liked), D Train’s “You’re the One For Me”, or even the dance mix of “Spy in the House of Love” by Was (Not Was). I do think about the fact that I some of those vinyl records that I had would now be considered rare and valuable. On the other hand, let me not think too much about it... Comments below the fold.
