[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-07 The Bodhi tree is revered in Buddhist tradition as the tree that Buddha sat under as he gained enlightenment. The most revered tree today is the Mahabodhi Tree, said to be a direct cutting from Buddha’s tree (which is no longer with us) . A number of years ago I was given what looked like an 18” stick that I was told was a direct cutting from the Mahabodhi Tree. The train of custody is short — 2 people — and I am as sure as I can be that its origin story is true. My Bodhi tree is now healthy, happy, and about 8’ tall. I have it in a pot and as it cannot survive under 50 degrees F, I move it indoors when the weather here in CT turns cold. The tree is now too tall for my home. I may be able to bend it over a bit for one more winter. I have spoken to arborists all over the country and there is virtually no place in the U.S. where it will survive. Hawaii, which would be ideal, is unfortunately the only place I spoke to where they have plenty of Bodhi trees. :) A botanist there suggested I take a cutting from my tree so at least its line will survive, but I am loath to let my tree die. I’ve spent many hours on the phone unsuccessfully trying to find it a home where it can grow to its full glory. Not sure if there’s an answer, but I’m hoping there’s an idea I can try. :) And if it’s far, far away.. how do you ship a light, slender, 8’ tall tree?
