Kitchen Table Kibitzing October 8, 2023 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-08 Cane Mutiny For walking any distance beyond a city block I have been using a cane. This began about a year or so ago. A neighbor gave me one of hers and it has proved satisfactory. On walks and hikes I’m only really comfortable when sitting, so I scope out benches or other possible seats. I visualized a cane with an attached seat, and sure enough, Google found many. There are various types and price ranges, and I liked one that looked light enough for taking on the plane and usable on our coming Viet Nam trip. It was expensive, but I ordered it, in black. I figured out how to open it, twisting an obvious locking device, and it sprung open. Cool. Then I sat down. So uncomfortable and unbalanced; so disappointing. On last week’s KTK I mentioned this, and Zen pointed out that Dick’s Sporting Goods had a cane/seat for $29. I found it there in the golf department, but it had a flat seat on the side of 3 legs, suitable for golf, but not for walking any distance. Disappointed, I planned to return my purchase. Packing it up,I found a sheaf of instructions in the box; I hadn’t read them. There was a photo of a young gal sitting in the opened cane chair. “Oh, I see. I was sitting on it backwards” I said, clapping my forehead. Looks like a chair, right? Doin it right…..finally. It is so comfortable when you do it right. We used it on a long walk a few days ago; perfect when I found a shady spot. It takes one second to set up, and two seconds to collapse it back to a cane. It’s finely machined and amazingly clever. Old cane/new cane. This is not intended to be a commercial for any brand, more like an observation of looking at things in more than one way. Though I’m one of the, ahem, older Kossacks, perhaps this info might be of use to parents and older acquaintances.
