That isnt their primary goal [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-08 If Republicans really cared about either the debt or deficit, they could take one simple, first step – eliminate their $3 Trillion trump tax cuts. Second step, reverse previous tax cuts on billionaires and multimillionaires and corporations. Cutting the budget when every line of appropriation has its own lobby, its own advocates in the Congress, is hard, a slow, uncertain slog. GOP proposals to take a percentage whack across all discretionary spending is a lazy option that absolves budget cutters from making difficult decisions, and treats all programs as if they had equal merit. Easier for Republicans to freeze or cut broad appropriations regardless of relative items' merit, but even selective cuts in their eyes is better than taxing billionaires. Nikki Haley told the first debate audience that trump was responsible for a $7 Trillion hole in the budget. That has been repeated by other Republicans. Many now understand that they are as much at fault for the debt as the D’s. So, reversing the trump tax cuts is under consideration? Republicans won't even consider reversing taxes on the super rich because dissatisfaction with debt and deficit are just tactics to the main goal – limit and roll back government. The GOP elite, its media and its big money masters exploit the finance problem to frighten and rile up their easily manipulated base, ever churning that emotional cauldron. Much of their Base doesn’t want government because they see government as a change agent and fear of change is the theme of all their angry grievance. We have reached the point that even the pretense of GOP governance has collapsed. THey have neither the will nor the intellectual capacity to pursue any route other than the spending cut rut that they have followed since Reagan. Any day, some backward looking House Republican will extol the virtues of “trickle down”, and next declare the virtues of the gold standard. Their standard isnt what might work, but whatever seems to exploit the Base’s emotions, attracts cameras and contributions. Better in their policy to cut funding for widows and orphans than raise taxes on billionaires. They can’t deliver sensible policy and aren't really interested in real solutions. Real budget cutting would be hard. Reversing the trump tax cuts would be easy, but for the GOP it's impossible.
