They lost me, I didn't lose them, and why that matters now [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-08 Kos made me think. He made me think hard, even after he made me laugh with the leopard thing. Here’s what he said that made me think and that I’ll expound upon in a minute. I haven’t lost a single friend or family for supporting Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, or Joe Biden. I certainly didn’t lose and friends or family over my support for Elizabeth Warren. And I don’t know anyone who’s lost friends or family for supporting Bernie Sanders. So I read that and I thought, “You know what? I didn’t either.” Now, I’m not saying that there’s friends and family members that my relationship hasn’t become more distant, or even non-existent, but I don’t think those were because of me. I actually have maintained relationships with people who voted for Trump, not once but even twice. The reason I want to stay in relationship to them has nothing to do with politics, and vice versa. I’m not saying it’s easy, but I care about them and we’re working it out how we do. So back to the ones that have become distant or non-existent, that happened because there was absolutely no room for conversation, on their part, not on mine, although maybe they see it totally opposite. I don’t know. It’s been wearying, but at a certain point I’ve just said to myself, “You know what? I can love this person in the sense of never wishing then harm, but I cannot abide being allied to them because they’re freaking full of shit to the point of being dangerous.” These are terribly trying times for me, and from what I gather from reading here, for many others. I just have one more thing to say. What happened in Israel is horrible. Many of us have strong feelings about it. I have a daughter in Jordan. I also have raised funds on this very site very recently for my new friend, Zee, whose parents are Palestinians living on the West Bank. You can read about that here and here. But we can’t let it divide us. I feel very much like the press covering what happened in Israel is designed to get us sniping at each other. And even if it isn’t, we have our own democracy to save, and we won’t be much use to which either side we support in the current conflict over there if we can’t do what we need to do over here. I hope this makes some kind of sense. I am really concerned for my daughter’s and Zee’s family’s safety, so I just had to say something.
