I’ve no doubt that many here are affected by events in Israel personally, or know people who are. Please accept my sincere compassion.

This is my friend’s brief account of these events (he recently became a dual citizen in the US, to explain one of the sentences). A kinder, more decent person I do not know—truly brilliant and accomplished as well. I admire him immensely. For context, the writer is about as understated a person as you could imagine.

Dear [Chesterfield]: Thank you for your email. It's been the darkest day in Israeli history. I'm visiting Israel now with [my wife and baby]. Over here in my area it's just rocket attacks. We took [our baby] for a walk when this just started, and had to take cover when the sirens started. We're ok, but it's hard to watch the news and see babies get snatched from their parents, families captured and slaughtered, young girls taken to uncertain fates, old ladies paraded before a cheering crowd. The true scale of loss is still unknown. Entire communities decimated. Most names of dead and captured have not been released yet. It's the worst crisis we’ve ever faced as a nation. The failure by the government, intelligence forces, and the army here is unprecedented. People are fighting bravely now in the front lines, but the government is still MIA. I can’t begin to say how much this email grieves me. These events will probably affect everyone here, at this site, negatively in one form or another, now and in the future. But to those who are more immediately affected than the rest of us, please accept my empathy.
