Top Comments: At A Loss For Words... And A Topic... Edition [1]

As of this evening I’ve used the Top Comments tag 970 times. That’s a LOT of Top Comments diaries. Over the sixteen years I’ve been a Top Commenteer (first TC diary 9/7/2007) I’ve generally been able to come up with a topic no matter what else is going on. Yes, sometimes I put up an open thread-style diary because I either (a) am filling in on short notice; or (b) didn’t expect Life to take so much time when I planned to write! I’m sure that NEVER happens to anyone else, right? Yes I’ve suffered through bouts of writer’s block when my internal Muse decided to head off on vacation or to find herself or attend some Kossack Muse Jam and Bitch Fest, but I almost ALWAYS can find a topic.

But tonight. I kid you not, I’ve been thinking about what I could write about for days. And with T-minus 2hrs before post time, I am no closer to coming up with something than I was on Saturday morning. Why? Because more of the world is now at war after horrific, heinous attacks.

I am not Jewish, and I am not Muslim. I have never traveled to Israel or to the Middle East. The closest I have been is to Ethiopia (which is a site of internal conflict and war between ethnic groups). I am not qualified to understand the nuances of a conflict that has existed for my entire life and am not even going to try. Frankly, I run from any diary on the site that attempts to do so.

I really only think I understand a few basic things:

Terrorism- acts designed to sow violence and chaos- is evil and wrong. There is no explanation or rationalization that makes it OK. None. Full stop. It is EVIL. Killing children is evil and wrong. It doesn’t matter whose children. Or why. Killing civilians and noncombatants is evil and wrong. See: Killing children. Taking hostages, especially women and children, is evil and wrong. Unconditionally and without reservation it is evil and wrong. Judging an entire people by the actions and statements of their government is wrong. Peace requires great effort and great courage. It is not easy. But we can aspire to it.

If you’ve got peace quotes that are meaningful to you, or music, please fill the comment section with those. I suspect that much like cute pupdogs or kitties, we could all use more. I’ll leave the songs in my heart tonight, and then it’s off to see tonight’s Tops.
