[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-10 In the recent episode of Nuance, we discussed the unprecedented situation that unfolded, resulting in the removal of Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker. This first in US history was triggered by party mate Representative Matthew Gaetz. McCarthy’s short tenure as speaker seemingly started off on the wrong foot by undergoing 15 rounds of voting for confirmation. With Democrats firm in solidarity against McCarthy’s appointment and the Representative’s difficulty finding the same sort of support from his own party, it’s a wonder that he lasted this long. The House of Representatives on Tuesday ousted Republican Kevin McCarthy as speaker, the first time in history that the chamber has dethroned its leader in a no-confidence vote. McCarthy, of California, was voted out as speaker when a small band of eight hardline conservative Republicans joined all Democrats to approve a “motion to vacate” introduced by GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz, of Florida, a longtime foe of McCarthy’s. The final vote was 216-210. — CNBC House ousts Kevin McCarthy as speaker, a first in U.S. history Certainly, the Republicans that spearheaded McCarthy’s ouster were already not fans of his, but his decision to go against the fringes of the GOP in order to avert a government shutdown surely didn’t win him any favors with those members of his party. There are many reasons to distrust or disqualify Kevin McCarthy, but was this one of those reasons? Ideally, the speaker’s loyalty would be to that of the country instead of the party, which should present itself in a way that avoids government disruption. Some might argue that in this situation, McCarthy did just that. However, with so many votes at the ready, and when considering the speed with which McCarthy was removed from his speakership, it is clear that his peers didn’t view his job performance in a satisfactory light and/or opponents have just been biding their time until they could find a reason and a way to remove him from his seat. He didn’t do himself any favors with the Democrats via the factless and baseless impeachment hearing of Pres. Joe Biden. Nor were the extremists in his party happy with his direction that avoided the shutdown situation they seemed to be hoping for. What do you think? Did you agree that Kevin McCarthy should have been ousted from his role as speaker of the house?
