Kitchen Table Kibitzing 10/10/2023: But I'm Not the Only One [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-10 Ernst Eitner: Autumn morning in the Riesengebirge at Hain (1935) Good evening, Kibitzers! My weather seems to have settled, for the moment, into what I think of as “normal” for fall: low 60s during the day, dipping into the upper 40s overnight. This kind of weather is my personal favorite; I understand it’s not for everyone, but I’m happy. It’s midnight on Monday night as I write, so I guess that’s actually Tuesday, and I have apparently read too many diaries today and am just not feeling the pleasant diary I had assembled over the weekend. So, I am saving it for next time and shamelessly stealing brillig’s idea for Monday’s Top Comments diary, because that is what’s resonating right now. (It’s okay because she claims she didn’t have any ideas. 😁) While I’m at it, permit me to urge you, if you see any especially amusing or astute comments as you read the site, to send a link to them in a kosmail to the Top Comments group. Those folks work hard to put up a diary each night with top comments and mojo and images, and they need more to work with than they usually get! So anyway, brillig ended up writing about peace, and included some songs. I have nothing to say that she didn’t say better, so I recommend reading her diary. But I will steal a couple of her peace-themed songs, and add a bunch of their little friends. Since I should be in bed by now, I am not going to do my usual OCD “everyone gets a link, all the live performances are identified” thing — that takes forever and I need some sleep. My suspicion is that no one but me will mind. First purloined video: Julian Lennon sings Imagine in 2022 for Global Citizen's Stand Up For Ukraine. Nuno Bettencourt accompanies him on guitar. [3:20] And the second: Playing for Change offers Peace Train, featuring Yusuf/Cat Stevens, along with Keb’ Mo’, Rhiannon Giddens, and numerous other artists, listed out under the video on the YouTube page. [4:09] Now we’re on to the ones I had to find for myself! This is Bruce Springsteen singing Land of Hope and Dreams, from the January 2021 Biden/Harris Inaugural’s all-remote show, Celebrating America. [3:58] I’m sticking these next two together for a reason: I liked this 1989 performance of People Get Ready by Curtis Mayfield (who wrote the song) with Taylor Dayne and David Lindley, from the TV show Night Music, but the recording ends abruptly before the song is quite over. So I am adding Bob Marley’s medley of One Love/People Get Ready. It’s a 1984 video created after Marley’s death to accompany the Legends album. The video features a young boy, Jesse Lawrence, who lives in “council housing” in London (what we’d call “the projects”), and it has numerous cameos by artists I am too old to recognize by sight (Paul McCartney being the exception). People Get Ready [3:05] One Love/People Get Ready [2:42] The Youngbloods appear on some TV show, probably around 1967. They do not, however, sing Get Together — that happened in the studio, and then some enterprising YouTuber, having no video footage for it, put the audio over some video of them singing something else entirely, as far as I can tell. But at least we get to see the Youngbloods instead of just the record jacket. [4:28] Alicia Keys sings We Are Here in the official video. If, like me, you are not familiar with the song, you may like to see the lyrics here. [5:04] Judy Collins is joined by Pete Seeger on TV singing Turn! Turn! Turn!, I’m gonna say sometime in the mid 60s based on the set and the appearance of the two artists. (Collins released her recording of it in 1964.) You can tell it’s early live TV because Seeger plainly learns on the spot what they’re going to sing. Good thing he wrote it. [4:32] Stevie Wonder and Glen Campbell perform Blowin’ in the Wind on yet another unidentified TV show, but this time, we know the year is 1969. [5:17] George Harrison sings Give Me Love in a 1991 live performance. [3:48] Dionne Warwick sings What The World Needs Now, in 1966 on yet another now-anonymous TV variety show. TV in the 60s was loaded with them. [2:46] Luciano Pavarotti does a Pavarotti and Friends show in 2000 to benefit Cambodia and Tibet, and All You Need Is Love is the all-cast-onstage finale. In addition to Pavarotti, we have Eurythmics, Enrique Iglesias, Savage Garden, Mónica Naranjo, Biagio Antonacci, Aqua, Tracy Chapman, George Michael, and Zucchero. [3:53] In our finale, and also the finale of the Vote for Change concert in Washington D.C. in 2004, Bruce Springsteen is joined by John Fogerty, the (then-Dixie) Chicks, Eddie Vedder, Dave Matthews, Jackson Browne, and Bonnie Raitt to perform Nick Lowe’s What’s So Funny ‘Bout Peace, Love, and Understanding. (You will need to look sharp to spot a couple of those people, but they are there!) [4:02] If you have other peace songs we can listen to, feel free to add them in the comments!
