Chicago Sun-Times: 104-year-old skydiver, Chicagoan Dorothy Hoffner, dies days after becoming oldest person to parachute from a plane by Sophie Sherry Earlier this month, 104-year-old Dorothy Hoffner set the world record as the oldest person to parachute from a plane. “It was nice, peaceful,” Hoffner said when she landed on the ground. On Monday, a little over a week after her record-breaking jump, the lifelong Chicagoan died peacefully in her sleep, according to close friends. A spokesperson for Skydive Chicago & U.S. Parachute Association said they were honored the skydiving experience was able to serve as a cap to an “exciting, well-lived life.” “Skydiving is an activity that many of us safely tuck away in our bucket lists,” the statement said. “But Dorothy reminds us that it’s never too late to take the thrill of a lifetime.” On Oct. 1, the lifelong Chicagoan jumped from a plane at Skydive Chicago Airport in Ottawa, about 80 miles southwest of Chicago, saying, “There was nothing scary about it.” She broke the Guinness World Record for the oldest tandem parachute jump set in 2022 by a 103-year-old in Sweden. New York Times: Republicans Remain Divided Ahead of Speaker Vote by Luke Broadwater Republicans toiled on Tuesday to unite around a candidate for speaker but appeared no closer to consensus on the eve of an internal party contest that has highlighted their divisions and deep uncertainty in the House of Representatives. Emerging from an hourslong closed-door candidates’ forum on Tuesday evening, several Republicans said they remained deadlocked as several competing factions had become dug in for their candidates. That paved the way for a potentially raucous and drawn-out G.O.P. election on Wednesday morning and suggested that the House might go without a new speaker for days as the party worked through its rifts. Asked what the chances were that the House would select a new speaker by Wednesday as scheduled, Representative Thomas Massie, Republican of Kentucky, said: “I’d put it at 2 percent.” Washington Post: New charges accuse George Santos of identity theft, credit card fraud by Anumita Kaur A superseding indictment made public Tuesday charges Rep. George Santos with stealing the identities of family members and using donors’ credit cards to spend thousands of dollars, intensifying the legal peril facing the freshman congressman five months after he was charged with a host of other financial crimes. Santos, 35, faces 10 additional charges, according to the indictment: one count of conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States, two counts of wire fraud, two counts of making materially false statements to the Federal Election Commission, two counts of falsifying records submitted to obstruct the FEC, two counts of aggravated identity theft, and one count of access device fraud. The new charges were filed just days after Nancy Marks, the treasurer for the Santos campaign, pleaded guilty to fraud conspiracy and implicated Santos in a scheme to embellish his campaign finance reports with a fake loan and fake donors. CNN: Olympic icon Mary Lou Retton ‘fighting for her life,’ according to daughter by David Close Retired Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Mary Lou Retton is “fighting for her life,” according to her daughter McKenna Kelley’s Instagram. In an entry labeled “MaryLouRettonsFight” on the fundraising site Spotfund, Kelley said Retton has been in a hospital intensive care unit for over a week and “has a very rare form of pneumonia.” Kelley stated her mother is “not able to breathe on her own,” according to the Spotfund page. Spotfund has verified the fundraiser to CNN. NBC News: Star witness says FTX head Sam Bankman-Fried told her to commit crimes, mislead lenders by Marley Jay Caroline Ellison testified that FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried told her to steal money from FTX's customers and use it to repay firms that had lent money to Alameda Research, the crypto trading firm Ellison was leading. "Sam directed me to commit these crimes," Ellison said in court Tuesday after she told prosecutors that she, Bankman-Fried and others had committed fraud. Ellison, who at various times also dated and lived with Bankman-Fried, said Alameda took about $10 billion from customers who had put their money on the FTX exchange to trade digital currencies. She said Bankman-Fried set up the system that let her move the money. She also said Bankman-Fried directed her to send balance sheets to lenders that made Alameda's losses look less risky. Guardian: Biden condemns Hamas for ‘act of sheer evil’ and says US citizens taken hostage by Lauren Gambino Joe Biden on Tuesday pledged unflinching support for Israel, calling the assault by Hamas militants that left nearly 1,000 people dead an “act of sheer evil” and confirming that some US citizens are part of the many currently being held hostage. In a televised speech from the White House, the US president said at least 14 Americans were killed in last weekend’s attack by Hamas, the Palestinian group that controls Gaza, and a yet unknown number of Americans are being held hostage. The attack saw gunmen crossing the border from Gaza, raiding Israeli cities and gunning down civilians in their homes, cars and at a desert music festival. As many as 150 hostages are believed to have been taken. More than 900 people in Gaza have been killed in retaliatory Israeli airstrikes while enforcing a “blockade” that sealed off the besieged territory of 2.3 million people from food, fuel and other supplies. Jerusalem Post: Shells launched at Israel from Syria, IDF fire at source The IDF said it was responding to shells fired from Syria into Israel on Tuesday night. Some of the shells most likely landed in open fields in Israel's Golan Heights, the military added. The IDF responded with artillery and mortar fire toward the source of the Syrian shelling. Fire from Syria came after the IDF confirmed that Israeli tanks targeted Hezbollah observation points in southern Lebanon after some 15 rockets were fired into northern Israel. AlJazeera: Analysis: Is Hamas a more sophisticated force than Israel imagined? By Philip Ingram The tactics we have seen Hamas use in their attack on Israel last Saturday have been some of their most sophisticated yet, suggesting a level of planning and preparation we have not witnessed before. The group used air, sea and land in what in military terms is known as multi-domain operations. It carried out initial strikes on Israeli observation posts using drones before its massive rocket attacks overwhelmed the Israeli Iron Dome defences. These were what are referred to as shaping operations – in essence preparing for the next stage, the physical entry into Israel. Next was an unprecedented physical infiltration, attacking Israeli civilians and military targets from multiple directions. Underpinning all these activities has been the use of fear tactics against civilians – including by recording and broadcasting attacks in Israeli border communities and a music concert as well as by capturing Israeli soldiers and civilians and taking them back into the Gaza Strip. Hamas also attacked Israeli military targets killing and capturing people and capturing Israeli military equipment. BBC News: Finland investigates suspected sabotage of Baltic-connector gas pipeline by Kathryn Armstrong & Vishala Sri-Pathma Finland says damage to an underwater natural gas pipeline with Estonia on Sunday may have been deliberate and was probably caused by "external activity". The Baltic-connector pipeline was shut down after a sudden drop in pressure. A telecoms cable was also damaged. Finland's prime minister said on Tuesday that the source of the leak had been found and was being investigated by both countries. Petteri Orpo added that the cause was not yet clear. Finnish sources have told the BBC the suspicion falls on Russian sabotage as "retribution" for Finland joining Nato in April this year.
