I’m being salty tonight because I did everything right. [1]

I got my Covid vaxes, and encouraged others to do the same. I washed my hands, wore my mask, kept up on the latest CDC news. I wasn’t able to stay home because apparently being a fast food supervisor was “essential work,” but I tried to limit my exposure to others.

And yet, almost the same week the pandemic was declared over—which I knew was bullshit, but the irony of the timing burns us, precious—I fell victim. I got Covid mid-May, 2023.

By the time I realized I had Covid and not just allergies, it was too late for Paxlovid. And of course THAT was when it chose to hit me like a Mack truck.

Shortly after, I was laid off, so I haven’t had health insurance. But I’ve also noticed an increase in difficulty in speaking—suddenly being unable to say words or phrases I’ve pronounced just fine for years (more irony: one of them is “the pronunciation”), because my tongue gets tangled or I just straight-up stutter on it.

I was known for having loud, clear, beautiful diction. I’m a trained actor and singer. And one coughing lady in a TJ Maxx later…well. As a very wise bald man in a spaceship once said, it is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose.

Still, I beat the odds. I worked with the public for the entire time there was no vaccine. I live in a purple state, so I had plenty of maskless wonders around (including one who pulled an assault rifle on me because my cashier asked him to mask up). And I was okay for all that time.

All of this is to say that as we get back into flu and Covid season, please get your boosters and masks at the ready. They aren’t foolproof, but they will help.

Get vaxxed and masked. I’d say it out loud, too, if I still could.
