Josh Hawley’s Version of Trading Places [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-11 Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) is not a stupid man. Hawley graduated from Yale Law School after his undergrad work at Stanford. He was a law clerk for Chief Justice John Roberts before defeating Democratic former Senator Claire McCaskill in 2018. He instead chose to approach a problem with a grade school solution, “Israel is facing [an] existential threat. Any funding for Ukraine should be redirected to Israel immediately,” wrote Hawley on X. With all that academic prowess, proposing that we stop funding the effort of Ukraine to stop Russian atrocities and instead transfer the money to Israel is like the dollar bet of Duke and Duke in the movie Trading Places. The movie’s premise was to see what happens when you ruin one life to prove another could succeed in its place. Hawley’s experiment with human lives is more heinous. The Republicans have for years talked about picking winners regarding race, gender, and business. Yet Hawley wants to decide what children are kidnapped, whose women are raped, and what people are murdered and butchered. Almost nothing we have heard in Israel has not happened in Ukraine. Vladimir Putin has bombed hospitals, killed babies, kidnapped children, raped men and women both, and murdered the elderly. His plans to freeze, starve, and deprive Ukraine’s people of medicine and healthcare are barbaric. If Hawley were truthful, he would admit this is a ploy to please Donald Trump and his minions. Is there anyone with common sense who does not believe that had Mr. Trump defeated President Biden in 2020, Ukraine would be in the hands of Russia? If not already dead from sarin poisoning, Volodymyr Zelenskyy would be cooling his heels in a Russian gulag awaiting execution. In the months before his death, Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin hinted at a coup against the Putin regime. His plane crashed, killing him instantly; for most of the world, it was a ho-hum moment because it was just a matter of time. Fortunately for America, it has a leader who is not blatantly transactional. The United States is not a business to be operated like a corporation, despite what GOP politicians would have you believe. Beyond that and even more dangerous, the Republican party has moved past transactional politics into a sheer lust for power. We are used to lies from the party, like death panels and post-birth abortions, as a method of controlling their constituencies. Gerrymandering is one of the few examples of both sides do it propositions left in politics. Even that has been bastardized into a philosophical imperative by the GOP: If I can’t have it, no one will. Take, for example, the recent election of Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Janet Protasiewicz. Her election has spawned talk of impeachment because the GOP state government does not like her views, the same arguments she won a whopping eleven-point victory espousing. Taking away voters’ wishes is now a feature and not an anomaly Senator Hawley raised a fist in solidarity with the most violent attack on the Capitol since the British burned the White House and the Capitol in 1814. Hawley, Rep. Boebert, and other Republicans in both Houses of Congress are willing to barter away the lives of Ukrainians, Israelis, and Palestinians. Choosing a personal grab for power is anathema to the promise of America worldwide.
