Progressive / humanist Bibliography for Israel-Gaza commentary (submissions invited) [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-11 As ever in the Rally Round the Flag fervor that arises from violent attacks, MSM perspectives seem almost or fully aligned with militarist paradigms and responses to the horrific terrorist violence committed by Hamas. Condolences to all who have been touched by the tragedy. I have been heartened to find some voices emphasizing humanity, and though others might benefit likewise — plus if I post it publicly, maybe crowdsourcing will bring me more heartening perspectives. Music here (not situation specific), essays below the fold. Jim Scott — (I Am Peace, And) I Am Waiting In discussion of his scathingly dismissive song Here’s to the state of Mississippi, composed the day that 19 suspects in the murders of Schwerner Chaney and Goodman were released without prejudice, Phil Ochs once wrote “Even though reason later softens [our] rage, it is essential that rage is recorded, for how else can future generations understand the revulsion that swept the country?” Sometimes this is the correct action. Now though, I think Israeli bombs will be the record of our revulsion at Hamas this week. In my music today I yearn for humanity that is the only path to overcome these horrors — “only love can conquer hate”. There is no prior state of peace to restore to the region — Gazans were better off before Hamas launched this sickening attack and Israeli retaliated as predicted/intended, but the Israeli siege has been ongoing for 17 years, and occupation for decades longer — they were not at peace. We hope peace will come. Pete Seeger — My Rainbow Race “Don’t you know you can’t kill all the unbelievers / There’s no shortcut to freedom” Jose Luis Orozco — Paz Queremos Paz (traditional) Violence in Israel is tragic for Israeli children; violence in Gaza is tragic for Gazan children. “For all the children throughout the world, we want peace and liberty” +972 Magazine editorial, Saturday. The terror and pain in Israel are terrible — and they should be a chance to empathize with disenfranchised Palestinians. Blog commentaries at The Debate Link, Saturday and Monday. Blogger David Schraub lectures constitutional law at Lewis & Clark Law School in Oregon; he specializes in analysis of anti-semitism, and contributed to the Nexus framework for evaluating rhetoric as anti-semitic. He argues here for considering the situation from a policy perspective, and actually thinking about what can and cannot be okay under the circumstances. Senator Bernie Sanders public statement Wednesday afternoon. we can and should care about innocent people on both sides of this conflict at the same time. That is our responsibility. Jacobin article on squad members in the House, Tuesday. Obviously the instinctive response to being attacked is to counter-attack. Rationality means evaluating the instinct before enacting it — what is the plan or mechanism by which bombing Gaza “more powerfully” means fewer attacks by Hamas over the next 20 years?
