Quincy, CA [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-12 I got the idea for this diary from yesterday’s Daily Bucket by Capt. BLI. Thanks, Cap’n! The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns. We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on Follow. My photography hobby results in almost all birds, because they’re the most numerous and visible of wildlife, at least for me. However, as I tell people I meet who ask me about what I’m photographing, I say “Birds, mainly, but I’ll take a photo of almost any wildlife or interesting thing.” That certainly includes insects, spiders, mammals, amphibians, fish, reptiles, molluscs, crustaceans, and anything like a millipede or solpugid. Uh, did I leave any type out? Here are some of my best shots of the non-birds during this 2023 summer season. TRIGGER WARNING. SPIDER AND SNAKE AHEAD. Common Whitetail Jun. 24 Cardinal Meadowhawk Jun. 24 Pale Swallowtail Jun. 26 Pacific Chorus Frog, by the dozens. Jun. 29 Echo Azure Jul. 3 Bullfrog, female Jul. 3 Vivid Dancer Jul. 9 Pine White Jul. 9 California Mule Deer. Love that velvet, and the juxtaposition of its color with its wildflower surrounding. The eyeball is what really jumps out though. Jul. 9 Variegated Meadowhawk Jul. 9 Black Widow Spider. Just a little-bitty thing, actually. Maybe about 8mm in diameter. Jul. 15 Carpenter Bee. These are really big bees, a full inch in length, sometimes a tad larger. Jul. 17 Eight-spotted Skimmer Jul. 17 My BIG PRIZE for this summer, American River Otter Jul. 19 Western Swallowtail Jul. 20 Botta’s Pocket Gopher Jul. 24 Woodland Skipper Jul. 25 Giant Crane Fly. Note in second photo, door knob shown for scale. This thing was huge, for a flying insect. But despite its appearance, it is not only utterly harmless to humans it is very beneficial, being a pollinator. Aug. 5 Pacific Chorus Frog, again. I was happy to be able to get this “macro” shot of a relatively small frog. It was less than an inch long. Aug. 8 White-lined Sphinx Moth. There have been numerous of these around the pond where all the wild sweet pea grows. Aug. 10 California Mule Deer, this time mama and kids. Aug. 13 Painted Lady Aug. 14 Foggy morning interlude in the valley. Which explains the shot following this one. 😁 Aug. 23 When it’s foggy out and nothing to photograph, might as well bake a pie. Aug. 23 Sun doesn’t stay hidden long. Common Green Darner; darn hard to photograph this Fast Mover. Aug. 24 Yellow Jacket paper wasp. Ground had caved in around the nest; it was cold this morning so the wasps were sluggish and good thing that; I nearly stepped in this hole. Sep. 3 California Mule Deer fawn. Included mainly for the “awwww….” factor. 😍 Sep. 4 Blue Mud Wasp Sep. 5 Crane Fly, ordinary size type. Still, these are relatively large insects. Sep. 14 Western Pond Turtle Sep. 28 Bullfrog, little one. Sep. 28 Gopher Snake. Maybe about ten inches long, max. First one I’d seen since Oct. 2020. Oct. 6 Bee Fly. Bye-bye. Oct. 5 Now it’s your turn. What’s up in your natural world? Please include your location in your comments and of course photos if you got ‘em!
