Because when you have a history of taking people’s land and forcing them to live in a place that does not support basic human dignity, you as a nation are responsible for keeping the peace. In the current generation, of course, when the dust has settled and the history is known, we as a nation feel shame for the way that we treated our natives. And I, for one, admire their determination to preserve both their character and the character of the land they loved.

Yes, you shoot back at the raiders. But demonizing and punishing the non-combatants was a step too far.
