And The Zombie GOP Staggers On [1]

Every House Republican knows that the chaos they have created is damaging to themselves as candidates, the reputation of their Party, to the US and to our allies. Yet, they cannot help themselves, they cannot organize themselves, they can only cannibalize themselves.

The House GOP, cannot reach accommodation with itself because it is not one party but two. There is a very conservative, backward leaning plurality of House Republicans and the MAGA extremists who are too many to be called a “fringe”.

If Republican elites, especially in the House, ever acknowledge that they cannot form a viable majority and need to turn to the D’s to elect a Speaker they will be admitting that the Republican Party is no more. The GOP is two parties split by many issues, not least attitude toward governance. The backward leaning Republican Party plurality wants to maintain Constitutional government. It favors small government but it favors some government. MAGA is a tribal, nihilistic party seeking preeminence for trump and rural white people. Knowing that it is a minority party, it opposes free elections for everyone, increasingly turning toward racism, homophobia, violence, and misogyny.

“Increasingly” is key. Each MAGA Congressman needs to up the ante to draw attention and contributions. MAGA is not powered by policy or principle. At its core MAGA is powered by increasing fear, its lack of policy forces it to embrace anarchy, its need to demonstrate bravado encourages its cruelty.

A coalition of the D’s and backward leaning R’s won't be able to solve difficult problems like immigration or the debt/deficit. Such a coalition could only manage to eek out minimal government operations.
