Explain yourself, Kamala [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-14 Googling “Kamala Harris”, there’s a 4 day old Atlantic article titled “The Kamala Harris problem”. Then there’s a 2 day old Atlantic article titled, “Kamala Harris is trying to change the narrative” (well, it’s been 2 entire days, hasn’t she fixed the problem yet?...). There’s a NYTimes article about VP Harris from Oct 10 (this is definitely starting to feel like piling on). I was waiting for someone to post about that one, but it hasn’t happened yet, so here I go. It’s in the New York Times Magazine and starts with “The vice president is still struggling to make the case for herself and feels she shouldn’t have to”. I really tried to read it, but honestly it felt like it was more about the writer than the subject. There was this paragraph after some positive talk -- But not everyone agrees with these supporters, including a number of Democrats — when granted anonymity to speak freely. A top Democratic consultant said that “she has a little Ron DeSantis in her,” in terms of the disconnect between political talent and expectations. One major donor said there’s an agreement among the party’s heavy hitters that having Harris as vice president to Biden “is not ideal, but there’s a hope she can rise to the occasion.” Sometimes the arguments against her feel more petty: A member of Harris’s staff remarked on the amount of down time the vice president schedules on trips, which includes an inordinate amount of time dedicated to hair care. Reading that here, I’d have to say that those are pretty minor complaints by people who are apparently too chicken to add their names. The writer had 8 months of anecdotes piled up and reports this (all about him bravely speaking truth to power), In Chicago, I directly placed in front of her the question others had only insinuated. “When someone asks, ‘What does Vice President Kamala Harris bring to the ticket?’ what is that clear answer?” I asked. Her team made clear it would be my final question. “Were you in this room of 2,000 people?” she asked. I nodded. “Did you see them cheering and standing?” “Yes.” “That’s what I say.” She stood up and walked out of the room. There were other cases where VP Harris didn’t respond in his preferred fashion. That’s the rest of this loooooong article. Oh, and he says she’s the least popular VP since 1989 — which would include Dan Quayle, Al Gore, Dick Cheney, Joe Biden, and Mike Pence. I don’t know if that means she’s more popular than George Bush or if no one ever bothered to ask such a question before that year. I’m feeling a “but her emails” vibe. Or possibly a vibe of “mean to her staff” or “eats her salad with something other than a fork”. [I’ve completely forgotten the gist of that last story, just that it was incredibly petty.] We’ve definitely been to this movie before and I, for one, am really sick of it.
