Kitchen Table Kibitzing October 15, 2023 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-15 Protected When we bought our condo, the original intent was to rent it out while we decided what course our life might follow. A rental agent told us what was needed, and we added a loft railing and detectors for smoke, CO 2 , and carbon monoxide. We put these everywhere they might be needed, and more. Circumstances changed, and we moved in ourselves, knowing we were protected from everything except earthquakes. Today our Iranian neighbor dropped in and I began to demonstrate my new cane, since she was complaining of back pain. Suddenly we heard a loud screeching sound. We threw open all doors and windows. The sound went on and off a few times, then stopped. We pulled one carbon monoxide detector off the wall, but then I noticed it had no batteries (we had removed them early on when it kept going off). We got out the manuals for all of our devices, but were unable to find a culprit. High on the ceiling upstairs is a hard-wired smoke detector which had never before gone off. One couldn’t reach it without a very tall ladder. It had to have been that, but one screech in 6 years makes a determination difficult. Since we have battery-powered 10 year smoke detectors installed, my plan is to have the hardwired detector removed, since if this happened in the middle of the night I certainly would have a heart attack. Another neighbor whose condo configuration is the same as ours confirmed she had done that already. An upbeat article in today’s N Y Times: Earlier this year, I spoke with the pioneering psychedelics researcher Roland Griffiths, who has been diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic colon cancer. “I want everyone to appreciate the joy and wonder of every single moment of their lives. There is a reason every day to celebrate that we’re alive, that we have another day to explore whatever this gift is of being conscious, of being aware, of being aware that we are aware. That’s to be celebrated!” Here is the gift link (I have a subscription) www.nytimes.com/… [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/10/15/2199595/-Kitchen-Table-Kibitzing-October-15-2023?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=more_community&pm_medium=web Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
