I post a weekly diary of historical notes, arts & science items, foreign news (often receiving little notice in the US) and whimsical pieces from the outside world that I often feature in "Cheers & Jeers".

OK, you've been warned - here is this week's tomfoolery material that I posted.

ART NOTES — an exhibition entitled Degas and the Laundress: Women, Work, and Impressionism — showcasing Edgar Degas’s representations of Parisian laundresses (a visible presence in the city) alongside works from his contemporaries — is at the Cleveland, Ohio Museum of Art through January 14th.

YOUR WEEKEND READ is this essay by Harold Meyerson of The American Prospect, saying that — while the Biden administration’s manufacturing subsidies are disproportionately flowing to red states and districts (among other reasons, “factories take up space; there’s little room for them in metropolitan areas”) — he believes Investing in Disinvested America will be for the good of the nation, even if it doesn’t produce immediate results for Democrats.

THURSDAY's CHILD is named Butters the Cat — a California kitteh who was discovered after going missing for twelve years, due to his microchip.

SPORTING NOTES — you may think your sports team is bad … yet the men’s national soccer team in the small nation of San Marino hasn’t won a match since 2004 (with 132 consecutive losses) and rose from the 208th (and last place) in the world rankings to 207th place … because Eritrea, previously above them, was removed after four years without a game (due to internal strife).

TIME MARCHES ON — the infant who was the smiling Sun Baby on the UK’s Teletubbies series (named Jess Smith) is now, at age twenty-seven …. expecting her first baby.

FRIDAY's CHILD is named Ted the Cat — an English kitteh who went missing for a month, then was located in the kitchen roof at the local airport in southwest England, where workers matched him to a social media post.

SEPARATED at BIRTH — two men of humor: the recently deceased clown (who worked mostly in Europe) Jango Edwards and TV/film star Robin Williams.

...... and finally, for a song of the week ...........................… hectic week, so only time for a quick hit.

Though her given name is Chan Marshall, the indie-rock world knows her as Cat Power — and last year she recorded a live album at the Royal Albert Hall in London, a tribute performance set to a 1966 Bob Dylan concert:

Held at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in May 1966—but long known as the “Royal Albert Hall Concert” due to a mislabeled bootleg—the original performance saw Bob Dylan switching from acoustic to electric midway through the show, drawing ire from an audience of folk purists and forever altering the course of rock-and-roll.

Cat Power

This album is due for a release next month, and I very much like her version of a Bob Dylan song that is my favorite (okay, Like a Rolling Stone is an other-worldly song). Others have recorded Ballad of a Thin Man, yet few come from name acts. Here’s hoping that Cat Power can remedy-the-situation.
