Plato warned us: Anti-LGBT warrior spends $317.48 at gay-friendly bar [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-15 “On the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness” — Matthew 23:28 Lauren Boebert is a Congresswoman. In a sane world, she would not be. It is not because she is poorly educated — Truman had no university degree, and Lincoln had little formal education. Her defect is that she has shown no desire to learn anything — unlike the voracious reader Lincoln. But even that should not automatically disqualify her. Many Americans are incurious but lead exemplary lives. Boebert’s unforgivable fault is not that she is ignorant — or even that she is an extremist. It is that she is morally unmoored, hateful and a hypocrite. She talks a good Christian game. But she does not act as she would have others do. In her Twitter bio, she celebrates raising her sons to be “men.” But you have to ask what her actions are teaching them. And she does not do the job she was elected to do. In the aftermath of the Q Club killings in Colorado, she posted the usual boilerplate “this is terrible” sentiments and offered useless prayers while demanding an end to “lawless violence.” It was thin gruel, as she did nothing in the aftermath to address the promiscuous gun laws and attitudes that cause so much death and injury. Whatever a politician's politics, they are elected to be problem solvers — not a hood ornament. The reaction to her platitudes was predictable and swift. Many illuminated her bigot-friendly, anti-LGBTQ rhetoric. They pointed out that diminishing a group’s humanity encourages bad actors to embrace violence. Child beauty pageant contestant Boebert denied her patent embrace of bigotry and said she aimed to prevent the sexualization of children. Her target was drag queens. Talk about missing the mark. To find a photo for this piece, I googled “beauty pageant kids.” I do not recommend it. I like to think I am a broad-minded person with a live-and-let-live attitude. I do not think of myself as a prude. But I was saddened at what I saw. I knew it was bad — it is why I wanted to make it part of this diary — but I was gobsmacked, and horrified. I even considered not posting this picture. But moral rot, like dry rot, does not go away just because you ignore it. We all deserve a mulligan — or at least the room to learn from our errors. But Boebert has learned no lesson. Her hateful rhetoric continued. And her IMAX-scope hypocrisy was revealed by her infamous Beetlejuice tryst. Boebert is a grown woman. At the time of her theater ejection , she was close to finalizing her divorce from her now ex-husband, Jayson. If she wanted to explore the pleasures of sexual contact with another consenting adult, I have no right (or desire) to judge. But as the kids probably no longer say, “Get a room.” What made her behavior so vile was her disregard for others — even after other patrons and the management had asked her to stop — and the fact that her adult behavior was in front of children. It was not just the sex. She was vaping in front of a pregnant woman — who had told her she was pregnant. Her interference with other ticket buyers’ enjoyment was enough to show her as a selfish git. And then, before the pictures came out, she lied about it. But I am not telling you something you do not already know. Now, it turns out, there is more. As reported by Politico, “Well before Rep. Lauren Boebert and her date got thrown out of a local theater showing of Beetlejuice for being disruptive and frisky, her campaign spent hundreds of dollars at his bar. The Colorado congresswoman’s campaign put down $317.48 in late July at Hooch Craft Cocktail Bar in Aspen, Co., according to her most recent campaign finance filings. That’s the same bar co-owned by Quinn Gallagher, the man who accompanied Boebert to the theater that fateful September night.” I have no idea if this contravenes campaign finance law — something she has already skirted with — but, unless she is completely clueless (a possibility), she must have known that the bar’s entertainment was enthusiastically liberal. I have never said anything positive about Mike Pence, because it is hard to find something positive to say. But Boebert could learn a lesson from him. At least he walks his talk. We laugh at his insistence at never dining alone with a woman not his wife — and observe that it is fundamentally sexist — but faint credit were faint credit is due, at least he lives by his own rules (as far as we know).
