The Inoculation Project 10/15/2023: Books for Science, Books for Fun [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-15 This week, we’re helping two book projects, in Texas and Louisiana, that are currently benefiting from matching funds from The College Football Playoff Foundation. We hope that readers who support quality public school education will help by sharing or supporting our featured projects. The Inoculation Project is an ongoing, volunteer effort to crowdfund science, math, and literacy projects for public schools in low-income neighborhoods. As always, our conduit is DonorsChoose, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation that facilitates tax-deductible donations to specific, vetted projects in public schools. Today finds us with last week’s projects completed (yay!), so we have two new ones, both from never-before-funded teachers and both with matching funds available from the same sponsor. Mr. Moore in Austin teaches in a high school for deaf students. He needs a supplementary biology book that I am very sad was not around when I was taking biology! Donations to this week’s projects are currently being matched by the College Football Playoff Foundation: The College Football Playoff Foundation is dedicated to elevating the teaching profession by inspiring and empowering teachers. We’re thrilled to match your donation and go the extra yard for teachers. PROJECT #1 Project: Everything you need to ACE Biology in one notebook Resources: Help me give my students ace their biology exam & EOC with confidence! Economic need: An Equity Focus School; more than half of students from low‑income households. Location: Texas School for the Deaf, Austin, Texas Total: $393.24 (2x matching funds from the College Football Playoff Foundation) Still Needed: $ 238.82 $91.76 ($46 from us) Project description by Mr. Moore: I am reaching out to you today with an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact on the education of our students through the "Big Fat Biology Notebook" project. We are seeking your support to provide 25 notebooks of "Everything you need to ace Biology in one big fat notebook" to our students, and I'd like to share why your contribution can truly make a difference. How Will Your Support Make a Difference? The "Big Fat Biology Notebook" is more than just a collection of pages; it's a powerful learning tool that consolidates complex concepts into an easily accessible format. Your donation of these notebooks will directly benefit our students by: Enhancing Learning: These notebooks serve as comprehensive study companions, helping students grasp challenging biological concepts more effectively. They simplify intricate topics, making learning engaging and enjoyable. Promoting Self-Study: With these notebooks, students can review and reinforce their understanding independently. This encourages self-motivated learning and empowers them to take control of their education. Goals for This Project: Our primary goal with the "Big Fat Biology Notebook" project is to provide our students with a resource that equips them to excel in their biology studies. By donating these notebooks, you will be directly contributing to: Empowered Learning: We aim to empower our students with the tools they need to navigate the complexities of biology confidently and efficiently. Academic Excellence: Our project strives to foster a culture of academic excellence, enabling students to achieve their highest potential in their biology studies. By investing in our students, you are contributing to a brighter future, not only for them but also for our community and society as a whole. Your generosity will directly impact young minds and help shape the leaders, scientists, and thinkers of tomorrow. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! Here’s a wordless video that looks through the book and shows you how it’s organized and what its scope is (and it’s considerable!) If you are interested, I’d also suggest checking out the sample on the book’s Amazon page — go to this link and click the “Read sample” button below the image of the book;s cover on the left. x x YouTube Video Ms. Guillory teaches third grade in a small city just north of Lake Pontchartrain. She is in serious need of some new books that will appeal to her students (and, in sadly common news, also pencils and paper ☹️). PROJECT #2 Project: Books a Million: in Need of Sprucing Up My Classroom Resources: Help me give my students a great classroom library! We are in need of books and pencils. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; more than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households. Location: D.C. Reeves Elementary School, Ponchatoula, Louisiana Total: $445.12 (2x matching funds from the College Football Playoff Foundation) Still Needed: $ 425.12 $309.82 ($155 from us) Project description by Ms. Guillory: Hi, I am a 3rd grade teacher. This is my second year in the classroom and I’m in need of new books for my classroom library. My students last year used hand me down books that were given to me. I am very appreciative of what I have, however I would love to have books that will engage my students. There are a few more things that would make our classroom better such as pencils and paper. I just want to make my classroom an inviting place for my students. Thank you very much. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! Among the popular book series being requested is a collection of Captain Underpants. Here, the author, Dav Pilkey, is interviewed on CBS Sunday Morning. x x YouTube Video An article describing what the “College Football Playoff” is, is linked here (for those who, like me, do not follow college football). If you’d like to know more about the College Football Playoff Foundation and their “Extra Yard for Teachers” program providing today’s grants, here is a short video. Both of our projects from last week were completed! Many thanks to the TIP community for persisting to meet our goals! Project #1, Science is like Magic, but Real…: Ms. Balsley’s Nevada school district finally approved a new middle-school science curriculum, but they didn’t have the resources to equip her to teach it. She writes: Thank you … Project #2, Raising Raiders: Leveling Up Anatomy in a Post Pandemic Class: Ms. Shands found that her Georgia high school students had missed a lot of hands-on science in middle school, and she needed help to catch them up. She writes: Your generosity is truly appreciated!!! On behalf of my students and the science department of Riverdale High School, thank you for your thoughtfulness. We can’t fully express how happy and grateful we are to have your help to get our first Donors Choose project fully funded. Once again Thanks!!! DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. You can read more at the link about their efforts to address the longstanding inequity in education. Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project seeks to fund science, math, and literacy projects in public school classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau. Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund projects in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required! Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 1057! The success-list diary also contains links and additional information about DonorsChoose.
