Not of the heart [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-16 I’ve been at this a long time. In fact, for 30 years now. Writing: It’s what I do. Genres: historical sketches, human interest, news, opinion, personal profiles, you name it. Topics covered: agriculture, air quality, environment, railroad safety, smart growth, transportation, travel and so much more. And, I can now add to my portfolio or repertoire and resume, community. It’s a nice mix, a nice change of pace. And, now with this, include explanatory note. But, I am beginning to question my decision, after getting seeming scathing criticism to some of my writing on this site, one in particular: my “A calming voice in the climate-change age” entry. I got nothing short of an earful (eyeful, actually) with that one. From many of the responses to that contribution that I got, it seems I didn’t have all of the facts needed to support my assertions. And putting in the dinosaur reference now seems taboo. I am now left wondering if writing about climate was out of my wheelhouse, if I had indeed made a mistake. One commenter seemed to suggest that what I had penned was disingenuous or, if not that, then such bordered on being that. Others, meanwhile, appeared ready to have me and/or my contribution in question removed from the site. That’s hard core! And, hard to take. But, there is something readers must know. When I finished writing, my thinking was that not only had I produced a quality product, but that I had all the bases covered — that is, until I learned otherwise through commenter feedback. That being the case, then to those of you who provided such input, what I can say to you now is you’ve enlightened me. That said, now I am left to wonder whether I myself should remove that entry, text, comments and all. But, also know this: If it was a misstep, it was a mistake of the mind, not one of the heart as my heart was in the right place. These kinds of situations can and do occur. And, when they do, it’s unfortunate, most being honest mistakes I would say. And, if I ever try to tackle the climate in a post again on this site, I surely better do nothing less than a bang-up. Otherwise, I’ll steer clear of this “hot-button” topic with a vengeance. You have my word.
