Museums 101: Wright Brothers memorabilia (photo diary) [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-16 Within the Carillon Historical Park in Dayton, Ohio is the Wright Brothers National Museum operated by the National Park Service. One of the galleries in this museum is filled with displays of memorabilia relating to Orville and Wilbur Wright, the Dayton brothers who developed controlled powered flight. According to the display: “To achieve powered flight, the Wrights needed a lightweight engine with adequate power. To meet their engine specifications, they asked their bicycle shop machinist, Charles Taylor, to design and build the four-cylinder, 170 pound, 12-horsepower, gasoline-fueled motor that drove the propellers of the 1903 Wright Flyer. To lessen its weight, the engine’s crankcase was cast in hardened aluminum. Taylor continued to work with the brothers until September 1911, developing and testing more powerful engines for the 1905 Wright Flyer III and later aeroplanes built by the Wright Company. The 35-horspower 1911 model displayed here was used for testing purposes.” [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/10/16/2199395/-Museums-101-Wright-Brothers-memorabilia-photo-diary?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=latest_community&pm_medium=web Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
