Top Comments: First World Problems Edition [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-16 The world is a LOT these days. We still don’t have a Speaker because the House Republican conference is a gigantic clown car of incompetence (and in all fairness to clowns, they’re professionals who make it LOOK like they’re bumbling whereas the Republican House is just bumbling egos at work). We are collectively reeling from the ghastly terrorist attack in Israel and its aftermath. The Former Guy is determined to lower the bar on his already low behavior standards (which already were so far below ground level it makes Death Valley look like a mountaintop). And… and… and. Against this background, this morning I dropped K2 off at school (it’s eight miles away so either he drives, or I drive him) and then took my car to the body shop my insurance told me to take it to. Hey Brillig, what happened?! Well… way back in August, I was at a friend’s house parked on a side street. When I left it was dark, and so was surprised the next morning when Mr. Brillig asked what happened to the car. It was… well. You can see in the photo. It’s very clear something taller than me… a truck… likely backed into me as it backed out of a driveway, CLEARLY felt the hit, and drove off. I began the claim process because this (a) wasn’t my fault; and (b) was going to be over my deductible. Then I got covid, and school started, and by the time they could fit my car in, it was October. I expected this to take a couple of days… it’s fender damage, no mechanical issues, and it should be easy. Nope. The collision center (that remember, my insurance said to use, as opposed to going anywhere I wanted and attempting to get reimbursed) tells me it will be a couple of WEEKS… “if all goes well and we don’t find additional damage and if the parts are in stock”. I actually called my insurer concerned about fraud and was told it was fine. Everything is fine. Did I mention our insurance won’t cover a rental car for this? So for the foreseeable future, Casa Brillig is a one car family with three licensed drivers accustomed to sharing two cars. We’re lucky that Mr. Brillig can work from home if needed, that our schedules will align enough that we can manage, and that if it is truly needed we have friends to help out with rides. I am fully aware this is a First World Problem, one that for most of the world… heck, most of the United States… is barely worth mentioning. We are beyond lucky to HAVE two cars usually, and be able to afford the costs associated with such. Many families in the US have no car at all and must juggle transportation issues regularly. When I told Mr. Brillig I was titling tonight’s diary “First World Problems” he immediately replied “You’re not going to turn it into a set of silly memes like not being able to reach your screen from bed or something like that, are you?” I reminded him I can’t control what you, my dear readers, post in the comments but that I would refrain from any of the usual #FWP candidates. So I’ll give you three items on my short-yet-hopefully-not-a-meme list and invite you to add your own in the comments! - My refrigerator tends to freeze produce and milk when overfilled. - My new glasses are great for everything except the distance required to see my laptop screen clearly - When I go to the Top Comments mailboxes and they are empty* [*I owe Denise Oliver Velez a belated apology for somehow missing her submitted comment last Monday. I don’t know how I missed it as it’s clearly in our mailbox. Thank you cohenzee for including it on Tuesday] Whether you have a FWP to share or not, I hope you’ll peruse tonight’s Tops then come say hi in the comments!
