Bomb strikes hospital in Gaza City, death toll reported as 500+ and counting [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-17 Admin note: the title of this story, “Israeli bomb named “Hydra” strikes hospital in Gaza City, death toll 500+ and counting,” has been edited to remove misinformation and clickbait, both of which are prohibited here per our Rules of the Road. The hospital is called Al-Ma’amadani, formal title Al Ahli Arab Hospital. This is via NYTimes live updates. The bomb was not actually called hydra. I don’t know if it had a name. But I know that this military operation is entirely pointless — there is no military victory possible. Whether “Hamas” are “eradicated” or not, the only military options here are “burn all of Gaza to the ground, including all the civilians”, or “screwup respecting international humanitarian law while eradicating Hamas, planting more anger and resentment that will grow into more terrorists later”. Hamas is a terrible organization, and what comes after them might be less bad. But fundamentally Hamas is not the problem, they are the symptom. Justified or not, Gazans and Palestinians are angry, and Hamas is but one manifestation of that anger. The general advice may be to “cut off the head of the snake”, but there is no Hamas snake — there is only a Hydra of Palestinian anger, and you cannot kill a hydra by cutting off its head. Disclaimers — Hamas are terrorists. The terror attack 10 days ago was abhorrent. The suffering in Israel is very serious and very sad. The hostages are important, and anyone with an actual plan to rescue them should please text the plan to IDFBB so they can actually work on it, instead of whatever it is they’re doing. Israel has a right to defend itself and its citizens from attack, within the bounds of treaty-acceded and customary international law — this precludes harm to civilians brought about by attacks that are not militarily necessary, or that are not discriminating between combatants and noncombatants, or where the harm to civilians is not proportional to the military value / necessity of the objective (combat actions must pass all 3 tests to satisfy IHL standards).
