Chicago Sun-Times: Plainfield man fatally stabbed 6-year-old Muslim boy after listening to conservative talk radio, prosecutors say by David Struett As the war between Hamas and Israel unfolded in recent days, a Plainfield man became increasingly concerned about what he was hearing on conservative talk radio — and became agitated about the tenants living in his home, a Palestinian American mother and her young son, prosecutors said. On Saturday, he allegedly attacked her and then stabbed her 6-year-old son to death — horrific allegations that have stunned the Muslim community in Chicago and beyond and drawn condemnation from around the world, including from President Joe Biden. Joseph Czuba, 71, appeared in Will County court Monday morning in a red jumpsuit and with matted hair, two days after the attack on Hanan Shaheen, 32, and her son, Wadea Al-Fayoume. Judge Donald W. DeWilkins ordered Czuba held in jail while he faces three counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery and two counts of committing a hate crime. Czuba’s next court hearing is Oct. 30. Also Monday, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department has opened a federal hate investigation into the attack. The Washington Post: Jordan digs in after first-round loss; next House speaker vote is Wednesday by Amy B. Wang, Marianna Sotomayor, Mariana Alfaro and Leigh Ann Caldwell Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) failed in a single round of voting Tuesday to win enough Republican support to become the next speaker of the House, extending the GOP’s chaos and uncertainty over who should lead the chamber after Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was ousted two weeks ago. Twenty Republican lawmakers voted against Jordan in the first and only ballot Tuesday, a far greater number than the four GOP votes he could afford to lose. Afterward, Jordan and his allies scrambled to wrangle additional support and initially vowed to return to the House floor Tuesday night — but ultimately said they would come back Wednesday rather than risk a second failed vote in the same day. “We’re going to keep working, and we’re going to get to the votes,” Jordan said. “I’ve had good conversations. We’re going to keep working.” Jordan’s near-grasp of the speaker’s gavel has been bolstered by his ultraconservative bona fides. He was a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus and has been a staunch ally of former president Donald Trump , supporting him in his effort to overturn the 2020 election. But Jordan’s candidacy for speaker also has highlighted the House Republican conference’s deep divisions, which have been laid bare in several high-profile fights this year over the nation’s debt limit and the appropriations process. The New York Times: Murders in U.S. Fell 6 Percent in 2022 as Violent Crime Declined by Shaila Dewan The number of murders in the United States dropped just over 6 percent in 2022 compared with 2021, the F.B.I. said on Monday. Experts say preliminary data for 2023 indicates that the decline has accelerated this year. The decline in homicides is an encouraging sign after the increase in killings nationwide in 2020, but the number of murders is still higher than it was in the years before the coronavirus pandemic. There were 25 percent more homicides in 2022 than in 2019. And the F.B.I.’s annual crime report, released on Monday, underscores how pervasive gun violence has become and how it is costing more young lives. Overall, violent crime was down slightly in 2022 over 2021, the report said. But firearms were used in almost half a million violent crimes across the country, about the same number as in 2021, the report said. The profile of the victims has shifted significantly. In 2020, gun violence became the leading cause of death for American children, and in 2022 things became even worse: The number of children killed in shootings increased by almost 12 percent, and those wounded increased by almost 11 percent. NBC News: At least 189 decomposed bodies were removed from 'green' Colorado funeral home by Antonio Planas Nearly 200 bodies were removed last week from a Colorado building owned by a funeral home that had advertised “green burials,” a much higher number of human remains than investigators had expected to find, authorities said Tuesday. Alerted by reports of a putrid smell coming from the building earlier this month, officers in Penrose found a mass of improperly stored bodies. At that time they could not confirm the number. But on Friday, at least 189 bodies were removed from the Return to Nature Funeral Home, according to a statement from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The bodies were taken to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office, CBI said. Guardian: ‘They believed it was safe’: death toll rising after blast at Gaza hospital by Bethan McKernan Hundreds of people are reported to have been killed in a massive explosion at a crowded hospital in Gaza City, in the biggest single loss of life in the blockaded territory in all the five wars between Hamas and Israel since the militants took over the strip in 2007. The Gaza health ministry, which is run by Hamas, said at least 500 people were killed on Tuesday night in what it said was an Israeli airstrike on al-Ahli al-Arabi, also known as the Baptist hospital. A spokesperson for the Gaza civil defence put the number of killed at about 300. The bloodshed at the hospital comes 11 days into a new war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group that continues to escalate before an expected visit to the region by Joe Biden, complicating US efforts to stop the conflict spiralling across the Middle East. DW: Belgian police shoot suspect in deadly Brussels attack Police in Brussels on Tuesday morning shot a man suspected of carrying out the fatal shooting of two Swedish nationals in the city center on Monday night. Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden later confirmed that the suspect was killed after police encountered him in a cafe in the Belgian capital's Schaerbeek neighborhood. "The perpetrator of the terrorist attack in Brussels has been identified and has died," Verlinden wrote on social media. Police are trying to establish a motive for the attack. The so-called "Islamic State" (IS) terrorist group later in the day claimed responsibility for the attack on its Telegram channel. The group said one of its fighters carried out the attack in the Belgian capital. BBC News: Ukraine uses US-supplied ATACMS for the first time, says Zelensky by Robert Greenall and Chris Partridge Ukraine has used US-supplied long-range missiles for the first time, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said. His comments follow reports the weapons, known as ATACMS, destroyed nine helicopters at Russian bases in the east of the country. Ukraine has not confirmed the missiles were used. Ukraine said an air defence system and other equipment were among the targets hit in Berdyansk and Luhansk. Dozens of Russian troops were killed or injured in the operation, it added. "They have performed very accurately. ATACMS have proven themselves," Mr Zelensky said in an evening address posted on social media, without giving details of when or where they were used. Russia's military has not commented.
