White to move and mate in two #419 - Juno at Jupiter [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-17 The NASA Juno spacecraft made its 55th flyby of Jupiter (Perijove 55) on Sunday, Oct 15, 2023. Launched in 2011, the Juno spacecraft entered Jupiter’s orbit in July 2016 and was expected to perform 36 science orbits around Jupiter and end the mission in early 2018. Instead, it has performed 55 longer-period orbits and will continue its extended mission at least until Sep 2025. The next Perijove will be after 38 days on Nov 22. During the Perijoves on Dec 30 and Feb 3, Juno will get within 1,500 km of the volcanic Galilean moon Io. Here is a small sample of some dazzling images taken by Juno during its first 50 orbits around Jupiter. Here is an image of Jupiter from Perijove 55 released today with some simple image processing by me. Now let’s make a deft orbital move to solve today’s chess puzzle composed by Comins Mansfield, the well-known British composer of Two Move Chess problems, in 1915. P.S. The chess puzzle is published on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is customary for advanced players to wait till midnight ET before posting the full solution. Before then, they provide some stats about the solution (e.g., the minimum number of distinct checkmate moves), help guide others, and sometimes post hints. But there are no hard-and-fast rules; feel free to post comments as you please.
