You and Thwaites: Sudden Ocean Front Property [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-17 Are you aware of the Thwaites Glacier? Probably not. You really should be if you live along the American coast, or any coast for that matter. What should you know about the Thwaites glacier? The Thwaites glacier is a segment of Antarctica that is nearly the size of Rhode Island. Scientists have predicted that sometime in the next 10 years this large mass will break off into the ocean. As a result, sea level may rise as much as 10 feet or roughly 3 meters. This rather rapid rise in sea level will have a dramatic effect on the coasts of the countries of the world. Depending on how low or how close to basic sea level these coasts are, substantial amounts of property will suddenly be found underwater. For instance, the population of Miami will suddenly need to improve their resiliency as Ron DeSantis would put it. Automobiles with gas engines will suddenly require snorkels, floats, and a deployable propeller. First floor apartments will become fish bowls or maybe homes for manatees. I-75, the famous alligator alley, will become the southern border of the state separating land from ocean. New York on the other hand will suddenly find that the underground subway stations are now under water, and they will need submersible vehicles in order to transport people above and below ground. The stations will need to have air locks to allow for underground passengers to leave their cars and exit to an above ground location. Given the amount of time between now and when the calamity may occur, there may be enough time to at least begin work on making those kinds of alterations. Fortunately for you, scientists have been investigating the possible changes in seacoast for quite a few years now and they have developed an application which allows people to view which is likely to happen in their coastal area as the sea level rises. You can go online to Climate Central and locate yourself or an area you would like to look at on the world map. You can then make your own adjustments to the amount of sea level rise that may occur. Since I first used the website over five years ago, it’s prime component, geographic topology, has gone through many improvements. This directly affects the amount of territory that will be affected. I’ve recently seen large segments of Thailand are no longer menaced by the sea level rise. Bangkok on the hand, already subject to significant flooding, doesn’t fair as well.
