A look all around: What went down during my once-a-year eye exam [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-18 So, the other day I had my once-per-year eye exam. Turns out I have astigmatism. When I said “an astigmatism,” I learned fast that I had been using the incorrect phraseology all this time. It’s just “astigmatism.” Now, I’m clear on it. Too bad my eyesight isn’t. But, with bifocals on their way, once I wear these, it should be a huge help. I am currently using what are called “cheaters” to read, type this text and watch tv. So, I also wanted to know what exactly astigmatism is. As explained, it is a condition where the eyeball along its transverse, horizontal axis elongates, the eyeball itself, in a manner of speaking, resembling an egg. This obviously has an effect on my vision. In fact, when my sight was being tested, in a left-eye-vs-right-eye direct comparison — at least this is how I, if you’ll pardon the pun, “see” it — the vision in my left eye, well, it didn’t, compare, that is. So, let me see if I have this straight: I have an odd-ball left eyeball? Regardless, I trust my world view is in no way, shape or form, altered, even if the one eye has been. It’s a part of — and not apart from — growing old.
