Al-Ahli Hospital explosion - not as clear as first thought [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-18 It seems we have no follow up diary this morning, now that new developments have unfolded. To recap yesterday, an explosion at the Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza caused massive civilian casualties. Hamas, the government in Gaza, was quick to publicly put blame on Israel, who in turn said it is investigating the explosion. News websites, Arab and Western alike, all quickly labeled the explosion as an Israel bombing. Social media was aflame, the world denounced Israel, Islamic militant groups called for uprisings and violence — but a few hours later, Israel issued a statement saying it was not them — it was a rocket fired by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad that misfired and caused the explosion. The PIJ (and Hamas as far as I can tell) has denied, and is still denying this. Media outlets walked back their blame of Israel, some faster than others. Al Jazeera was especially biased, still blaming Israel hours after it seemed clear that there is at least doubt about the responsibility. Late last night and into this morning, Israel has released its evidence. First, they released drone footage and videos showing the impact site — showing a tiny crater and not much damage to surrounding buildings. They have released radar evidence of the barrage of rockets fired at the same time as the explosion, with the path being directly above the hospital. Additionally, they have released audio they claim is from two Hamas terrorists discussing the explosion — and detailing how the rocket seems to be locally produced, not Israeli — possibly a PIJ rocket. The US DoD has also declared they believe the explosion was not caused by Israel, but by an misfired rocket. Hamas has, during this same time frame, released the following evidence to support their claim that it was an Israeli missile: (I have not seen any evidence, though I will add it here if people post evidence provided by Hamas). Many will ask the purpose of this diary. Yes, Israel commits war crimes. Yes, withholding food, water and electricity is indeed collective punishment and I condemn it. Israel will highly, highly likely do many more awful things, and we will call them out for it. But the purpose of this diary, and I say it clearly: to make sure people are aware that as of now, and unless other evidence is provided, it seems that Hamas and the PIJ not only butchered Israelis on Oct. 7, they also massacred their own men, women and children while firing rockets towards Israeli population centers— and used the event to smear Israel and endanger many Jews and Americans worldwide — with protests occurring around US embassies and a day of rage called for by Hezzbollah.
