Trains and dirty energy causing problems again [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2023-10-18 We see the issues with rail transport of oil and other oil products all the time, especially when they crash and burn. Well, Colorado got to play host to the “why we don’t want to keep supplying Texas and the world with coal” show again. A coal train, likely from Wyoming and headed either to Texas or to export, derailed between Colorado Springs — population about 480,000 — and Pueblo — 110,00. The derailment didn’t hurt anyone but it dumped multiple cars of coal directly onto Interstate 25, the main North-South highway in Colorado and a major truck shipping rout. The local news report is here — wasn’t firewalled for me. There is a detour that takes all the interstate traffic back through the Pueblo streets and up a two lane highway for 61 miles — versus the 31 miles on the highway. This also impacts a lot of people because Colorado put a number of facilities in Pueblo to support the local economy and a number of employees commute from southern Colorado Springs. And, oh yes the detour takes this traffic right past three of the entry gates for Fort Caron — one of the largest Army bases in the US. No issues with this at all.
